Uriah43 "Doctor Paul Henderson" (Kent Taylor) and his beautiful, sex-starved wife, "Carla" (Beverly Powers) venture to an island in the South Pacific to study the effects of an atomic bomb test which were conducted in the general vicinity. Traveling with them is a representative of the Peace Corps named, "Jim Farrell" (John Ashley) who is there to help the natives to better provide for themselves. When they get there they are told by the village chieftain, "Arcadio" (Andres Centenera) that the villagers have reverted to their primitive ways and both he and his grand-daughter, "Alma" (Eva Darren) are ashamed. At first the new visitors don't understand what Arcadio is talking about. They soon find out that the villagers are sacrificing young women to a beast of some sort near a large altar. It turns out that radiation from the atomic bomb tests have greatly affected the island. Not only do the trees become carnivorous at night but what is even worse is that a monster also appears at night and rapes and disembodies the women at the altar. Now, this film is the first movie in the "Blood Collection" series and while I am curious to see how the other 2 or 3 turn out, I am apprehensive at the same time. I say this because typically sequels are seldom as good as the original. And while this film was a low-budget production and had two very pretty actresses in Beverly Powers and Eva Darren, I must admit that the costume used for the monster was probably the silliest thing I have ever seen. You really have to see it to believe it. All things considered then, I rate this film as slightly below average.
Scarecrow-88 This is as bad as it gets, folks. Three Americans go to an island where they encounter trees with limbs that grab people, ripping them to shreds, not to mention a mutated man monster who the islanders sacrifice virgins to. The butterfly scene is proof that BRIDES OF BLOOD belongs in the annals of wretched creature features, this time shot in the Phillipines with two of the worst white heroes(in the form of scientists Kent Taylor and John Ashley)you ever to come across. Beverly Powers(as Taylor's horny wife)spends most of her screen time lusting after one man or another(and not exactly hiding it from her impotent, non-caring husband who seems immune to her delicious voluptuous breasts). Eva Darren is a luscious island girl Ashley saves from being torn apart by the mutant beast terrorizing the island people. The mutant monster costume is side-splittingly hilarious. There's a celebratory jungle dance at the end which brings the film to a crashing halt(it has no reason for being other than to seal the deal on Ashley and Darren's blossoming romance)and is unnecessary. Handsome Filipino actor Mario Montenegro(whose bones Beverly wants to jump)is Esteban Powers, owner of a palatial estate on the island who provides refuge to the Americans. Esteban's security is a brute named Goro(Bruno Punzalan)who beats on his servant staff of little people! Andres Centenera is Arcadio, leader of the island villagers who fear the beast and feed it from their own people, choosing names on paper as to determine who will be tied to poles to await being eaten. I watched this under the title, DANGERS ON TIKI ISLAND.
MartinHafer This film involves a group from the Peace Corps who have come to a tiny island to help out and do a bit of scientific research. When they arrive, they are shocked to see that the villagers involve themselves in a human sacrifice ritual of sorts. Oddly, while shocking, the group at first seemed to take this in stride--I guess they didn't want to pass judgment on quaint native customs. Soon after discovering this, the group is introduced to Mario Montenegro--who lives in a Western-style home on this completely primitive island! How he managed this is never explained, but considering how dopey the film was, I guess this didn't matter. Along the way, they encounter blood-thirsty trees (I am not kidding) and a horny green monster you just have to see to believe!Talk about low-budget trash! This is a horrible little movie that was made in the Philippines and starred American "actors" as well as Filippinos. As for the Americans, most didn't look or sound like actors--particularly "Beverly Hills" (a.k.a. Carla Henderson), who looks more like a 1960s-era stripper. Sticking his hot blonde bombshell with a group from the Peace Corps was unintentionally very funny (maybe she thought it was the "Piece Corps"). Mario Montenegro (as the Mad Scientist) was interesting because he answers the question "what would a Filippino version of Dirk Bogarde look like?". He didn't seem very menacing or interesting, but it was interesting to see that Mr. Bogarde has a twin (of sorts). As for most of the Filippino women, they were there mostly to have their clothes torn off--making their performances probably the most convincing in the movie. If I had to try to find some nice things to say about the film, I guess I'd have to say that for this type of film, the music and print aren't bad. The sores that later appeared on Montenegro are also kinda cool (though watching him transform was just plain silly). Plus, the naked ladies were rather attractive--though this makes this far from a family-friendly flick. For all the pervs out there, there just aren't enough of them to make this worth the trouble of watching it, either! The bottom line is that this is a super-low budget film with tons of schlock and I can't understand why it's rated so highly on IMDb. The only real value such a film has is as a party film--so you and your friends can laugh at how inept the whole thing is.By the way, for a laugh, look on IMDb at all the alternative titles for this movie--they are pretty campy!
GroovyDoom I saw this movie on television years ago when I was a kid under the title "The Island of Living Horror". It seemed as wacky then as it does now. Even then I realized how goofy the special effects were, but I definitely got into the cheap spirit of the whole thing. The bizarre aspect is that the whole movie seems like it was designed to spook young kids, and yet the film in its uncut form also contains some gratuitous nudity and gore. The plot concerns a group of dummies who venture to "Blood Island", a place where nobody in their right mind would dare to visit. Surely the sailors who ferry our protagonists to Blood Island are aware that it's bad news, but they leave the fools there anyhow. We have a scientist, his nympho wife, a 'studly' adventurer, and some miscellaneous others who are aboard to be menaced, and boy are they ever. It seems some stray radiation from A-bomb testing has done strange things to the local flora and fauna. A butterfly bites someone on the hand. The trees have animated roots and make shrill vibrating sounds while trying to grab ahold of passersby...to what purpose I'm not sure, since they don't seem to have mouths with which to bite anybody. The most troublesome mutation on the island is the appearance of a lumbering, mouth-breathing, humanoid monster with a desire for human sacrifices of the young female type. Could this be the radioactive alter-ego of the wealthy proprietor of the luxurious island hacienda, the one who has summoned our heroes there, the very one under whose roof they've taken shelter? The atmosphere of the flick is very "mondo exotica", with lots of faux-island music and groovy tropical scenery. There's a strong sense of sexuality running through the picture too, and not only because of the female nudity. Check out the scene where the doctor's horny wife finds that her sleeping husband isn't interested in sex and instead walks through the dark house until she finds monster-man's bedroom. She sneaks into his room to find him lying on his back on the bed, presumably nude and barely covered with a strategically-placed sheet, writhing orgasmically in what could be interpreted as either pain or pleasure, apparently in the grip of a sexual dream as she watches. Of course we know he's on the verge of transformation, but the scene can be read two different ways. She climbs eagerly into bed with him and reaches out to touch his body, only she is apprehended by the master's brutish manservant, who reacts more like a jealous lover and rebuffs her, sending her away. This whole scene is rife with sexual dynamics. Additionally, the pervasive voice of the creature, which filters all over the island while the natives huddle fearfully indoors, certainly sounds more like a man in the throes of a never-ending orgasm. These adult moments are what make this otherwise kiddie-style film a very strange thing indeed. Despite the juvenile nature of the plot, it's really an early sex-and-violence exploitation film. As I already mentioned, the special effects are rather un-special, and the main monster is one of the goofiest you will ever see. It looks like a tiki mug come to life. Once the tiki-monster problem on the island is solved, the surviving cast members relax by joining the natives as witnesses to a mating-ritual dance, conducted by some islanders with very poor rhythm. I don't know about you, but this part reminded me of that one vacation that the Brady Bunch took to Hawaii.
