Woodyanders Teenagers steal a corpse named Bud (an excellent and engaging performance by Gerrit Graham) that turns out to be a cannibalistic mutant that passes on its flesh-eating tendencies to anyone it bites. Pretty soon a previously quiet suburban neighborhood is overrun with the hungry fiends. Director David Irving relates the agreeably goofy premise at a snappy enough pace and maintains a perfectly harmless good-natured tone from start to finish, but the dumb gags miss more than hit, a dispiriting tepid quality hangs heavy throughout, and the movie frankly isn't that funny. Fortunately, the enthusiastic acting by the game cast keeps it watchable: Brian Robbins makes for a likable lead as smartaleck troublemaker Steve Williams, Bill Calvert contributes an affable turn as resourceful nerd Kevin, the fetching Tricia Leigh Fisher adds some charm and spark as the sweet Katie (and looks mighty foxy in a revealing bathing suit), Larry Cedar does well as geeky government agent Graves, and Robert Vaughn serves up a thick'n'hearty slice of tasty lip-smacking ham as gung-ho fanatic Colonel Masters. Moreover, there's a slew of fairly amusing cameos by such familiar faces as Norman Fell, Rich Hall (as an annoying chatterbox), Bianca Jagger, June Lockhart, Priscilla Pointer, Larry Linville (as a drunken coroner), and even Robert Englund in a fleeting uncredited walk-on. Ed Naha's inane script offers a few inspired touches, with an attack on a mailman by a ferocious zombie poodle providing a definite hysterical highlight. Both Arnie Sirlin's competent cinematography and Nicholas Pike's percolating score are up to par. Several cool Wall of Voodoo songs on the soundtrack rate as another nice plus. However, this picture sorely lacks the necessary sharp wit and raucous energy to really work the way that it should. A passable time-killer at best.
Aaron1375 So basically you should forget everything established in the first movie and about the cannibalistic humanoid underground dwellers as this movie has absolutely nothing to do with that movie. That movie while not all that good did at least look like a major motion picture while this one has the looks and is a B movie that tries to be a comedy. Basically, this movie is more of a zombie feature than the creature feature the first movie was. I am betting they did this to save money on make-up and monster effects as these creatures only have dark circles around their eyes and some deformed teeth. They did not bother making this movie a true zombie movie as that would have had to perhaps have decaying effects and wounds. In the end this movie is more like the film "Night of the Creeps", but not as nearly as good as far as the effects and gore or the humor for that matter. In the end the movie is a sequel in name only. The only reason this movie is called CHUD II it seems is to have the little subtitle Bud the Chud for the cuteness factor and comedy factor which is basically none existent for my tastes. The plot just has Bud infecting others and the horde of zombie like creatures grows and grows. Nothing new or funny being brought to the table in this one, but I did rather like the infected poodle.
Zoe Howard All i can say about this title is they obviously never saw the original film. The story is gone letting it run with a night of the living dead wannabe comedy routine done 80s style. And thats its one redeeming factor. the comedy. If you like slapstick horror then go ahead and check it out. if you are looking for something more serious i highly recommend you pass this one over. The overall suffering of this film is a lack of a well written script. If you are a fan of the first one i recommend you avoid this one. It will only disappoint you. The closest i can come to a compliment is how the film was shot. Granted i saw a full screen version of the film so the screen composition is a little different. Z
Michael_Elliott C.H.U.D. 2 (1989) BOMB (out of 4) The original C.H.U.D. (Cannibalistic Humanoid Underground Dwellers) movie has a rather strong cult following but I found the movie to be pretty horrid when I watched it a few years back so I didn't have very high hopes of this sequel, which it seems everyone really hates. I've read the screenplay was originally suppose to be the second sequel to The Return of the Living Dead and it seems true since this film is very similar to the first sequel to that film. In this movie, Robert Vaughn plays an Army nut who wants the last remaining C.H.U.D. to stay alive but it eventually breaks out of its little jail and goes on a killing rampage. Don't you just love a cannibal movie without one drop of blood? Don't you love a teen horror flick without any nudity? As you can tell by my BOMB rating, I want nudity and gore in this type of film and I got neither but I also got one of the worst horror/comedies I've ever seen. This movie is deadly dreadful from start to finish with some of the poorest written jokes I've heard from any movie. The comedy is horrid but the horror elements are even worse. Without question one of the worst horror films from the 1980s and that's saying a lot considering how many bad ones were released.
