SnoopyStyle Victoria Bodeen always had psychic abilities. She was beaten by her abusive father for her devilous powers. As a child, she had visions of her best friend Hope being murdered. As an adult, Tory (Claire Forlani) returns to Progress, North Carolina to open a store and face up to her demons. Her father remains a suspect. She reconnects with her cousin Wade Mooney (Chad Willett), formerly chubby Dwight Collier (Jonathan Scarfe) and Hope's brother Cade Lavelle (Oliver Hudson) who still carries a torch for her. Hope's mother Margaret (Jacqueline Bisset) and Hope's sister Faith Lavelle (Josie Davis) still blames Tory. Tory's visions continue and it turns out to be a serial killer who's killing on the same date that is soon coming up.Claire Forlani may not be big enough to hold the center of this movie or just as likely there aren't enough good actors to play the other characters. This is suppose to be a thriller but there is a distinct lack of thrills. The father is the only one that is threatening but he really doesn't have many scenes. His scenes with Tory are the only truly exciting scenes in the movie. The flashbacks don't have any tension and look like cheesy older effects. TV writer/director Stephen Tolkin is in charge and it looks like a TV movie. It's certainly doesn't have any cinematic style worth mentioning.
qormi First of all, I hate movies that are filed with terribly fake Southern accents. This was the terribly fake Southern accent movie from hell. Not only that, but the acting was unbelievably horrendous. Lines were shouted, faces contorted with constant mugging. The direction was completely inept...don't you need qualifications to direct...like a certificate or something? It was just as bad as the acting. The dialogue seemed like it was written by a middle school student. So let's see.....bad southern accents, shouted out lines, ham acting, inept direction....complete disaster. The lead actress obviously thought she was Scarlet O'Hara and this was Gone With the Wind....she was the most unbelievable ham actress...how may ways can I explain that this movie stunk? Okay, I'll stop now....
Abedsbrother There are a lot of descriptions of what the movie is about, so I'll just tell you whether you should see it or not. I have not read the book, so I cannot make pronouncements of accuracy or faithfulness to the text. I'll be honest: I watch CSI: NY, and liked Claire Forlani's role on that show, and I was looking to see what else she had done. This popped up near the top of my searches. I don't really care that perhaps the demonstrated use of guns in the film may or may not have been incorrect. I'm just looking for involving entertainment; and one or two wooden acting performances won't spoil it for me. That said, I did not feel that anybody was particularly 'wooden' (contrary to other user reviews). Most people were serviceable in their roles; not outstanding, but not a bother either. Forlani and Oliver Hudson had good on-screen chemistry, and Josie Davis was also good. Carolina Moon DOES move at quite a leisurely pace, and most of the action between the scary parts consists of conversation, so if you are looking for super-powers and supernatural battles, or fisticuffs with the occasional gun drawn, you will be disappointed for the most part. The flashes of 'special' sight are used sparingly, and as a result have great impact. This is not an adventure film; it is more of a character study. I was reminded (in a vague way) of some of Tom Selleck's Jesse Stone movies. Not of the characters, the plots, or even the resolutions, but of the overall feel of the film. The countryside looks glorious, and the sun shines brightly - but there is menace lurking quietly in the shadows. First time viewers should be warned if they think this is a family film. Little is shown on screen; but, there are events that happen off-screen that include the beating of a child (10 - 12 years old) (not spanking, but whipping) by her father, as well as rape and murder of several characters (all seen in the flashes of the 'special' sight, so they are very brief, but can catch you unawares). I repeat, nothing is shown on- screen; but there was a director (Scorsese?) who said that the human imagination is more powerful than the most gruesome depiction on screen could be. Be warned! These are all peripheral considerations, though. Carolina Moon was for me a tense and moving picture that I will return to again to watch the characters, even though I now know the outcome. Special props to Forlani, Hudson, and their supporting cast for keeping their acting straight-forward, and for some directing which never gets in the way of the story. A solid 6 out of 10.
kreidler The story is about a psychic woman, Tory, who returns to her hometown and begins reliving her traumatic childhood past (the death of her childhood friend and abusive father). Tory discovers that her friend was just the first in a string of murders that are still occurring. Can her psychic powers help solve the crimes and stop the continuing murders? You really don't need to find out because, Oh My God! This was so so so so bad! I know all the Nora Roberts fans will flock to this movie and give it tons of 10's. Then the rest of us will see an IMDb score of 6 and actually think this movie is worth watching. But do not be fooled. The ending was predictable, the acting TERRIBLE (don't even get me started about the southern accents *y'all*) and the story was trite. Just remember....you were warned!
