jotix100 Nick, a man living off a trust fund, has not amounted to much in his life. Finding himself without his girlfriend Zoe, who decides to try a new life in Hollywood, Nick has no idea what to do with himself. One day, he spots a young man practicing soccer movements in a school yard. The boy shows he has potential. Nick having played the sport before, becomes interested in teaching what he knows. In order to do that, he must first ask for a job at the school, something he is not prepared for.We have seen this movie before. The older man that becomes a mentor to a group of kids, making them excel, by inspiring in them the spirit of competition and achievement. Directed by Will Frears, it is not a total waste because of the work of Hugh Dancy, a likable actor that does not have to do a whole lot to convince the audience he is none other than Nick. The comedy is predictable, although it shows a new director that no doubt will do better with the right project. The supporting cast include Liane Balaban, playing Gabrielle, the doctor that catches Nick's eye. Young Jonathan Ramirez seems like a natural as Hector. Other players include Mamie Gummer, who has been getting quite a lot of roles in recent mainstream films. Something that did not strike the right note was the opera sequence in which, as though by magic, we were taken to the magnificent Budapest Opera House where Gabrielle and Nick attend a performance and with some networking thrown in. One wonders why having two world famous opera venues in New York, the creators of the film decided to fly them to Hungary?
johnhonoluluhawaii I really enjoyed this movie. It actually made me feel for the main character. Not too many movies do this for me. But when you feel for the main character and start being immersed in the movie, you know that it's a good movie. I take all reviews with a grain of salt now, especially after watching this movie. I cannot understand why this movie garnered such bad reviews because I think it is a well made movie. The actors did a great job and the story was very well done. All I can think of is that these reviewers are sadly jaded or just simply hate entertaining movies like this which they consider below them. Or, they simply hate the actors or this genre. This is a must-see movie in my opinion. It has a lesson to teach and it is quite well made. Families should watch this as this movie has value. It teaches us that we can all change for the better. Even when others don't think so. So what if others don't believe in you? There are others that do. I cannot recommend this movie more. It is just plain excellent.
adiace Coach as all the elements of a romantic comedy. It even builds up to a be a kids sports drama (like mighty ducks). Unfortunately none of the human relationships are developed (or make sense), and as a result the whole damn thing falls apart. At times it feels like they had a decent movie together but then they edited any semblance of character development out of it.I can not believe I made it to the end of the movie, towards the end it feels like it will all come together, but it doesn't... making the movie even more disappointing than I thought it would be.All in all, the only reason to watch this movie is if you are on a quest to watch every par movie made in 2010 (like me).Oh, also, the kids in the movie are the best (and only) actors.
napierslogs "Coach" has the formulaic kids-teach-coach-how-to-succeed-in-life same old drivel written all over it. And it never rises above.Hugh Dancy plays Coach, built from the same mold as Hugh Grant in "About A Boy". I like Hugh Dancy but even he isn't able to make this film very likable. He stars as a rich trust-fund slacker, and when his girlfriend dumps him he realizes he needs to find a job to finally grow up. So he coaches kids soccer, where we find the usual misfit kids who he is able to bring together and they show him a thing or two about growing up. From the outset he's a good coach but in the usual, lame way - this film didn't add anything new or intelligent.I was disappointed with the romantic comedy story line, as his love interest didn't add any comedy, and her character wasn't redeeming in any way. Also very poorly cast (that girl is definitely not a doctor). The other main problem with this film trying its hand at romantic comedy is that it alienates its audience. With the mild sexual content I don't think it's meant for kids and most adults would want to go for something more intelligent. It would be suitable for teenagers but they aren't given any characters to relate to."Coach" ultimately does nothing wrong, but its very disappointing that they couldn't add any bit of originality or thought to this tired formula.
