karahashianders I appreciate when movies can take me to places and around people I would never want to see, but which demonstrate universal truths and archetypes about humanity. This movie gives you a solid portrayal of a man consumed by the past, of people who treat others as objects, and of people who don't have the stones to stand up for what's right. This is the best (and most disturbing) movie I've seen in quite a while. The casting, the story, the acting, and the music were all excellent. Despite the dark subject matter, there were some legitimately funny parts as well, and the music kept the movie from feeling cold and impersonal - which for me left a more nuanced and lasting impression. If you've ever pondered the question "Do some people deserve to die?", where that line should be drawn, and can handle some very dark and violent scenes, this is the movie for you.
anthonycohen-60451 A truly unsettling little film & a classic of modern British cinema. I call it a little film because there is nothing flashy, brash or glamorous about this, its a straight forward plot, told in a straight forward way. Toby Kebbells character Anthony aside there are no likeable characters in the film, but who says there has to be? I see many reviews on this site with people complaining 'i didn't like any of the characters or care for them' but why does this always have to be the case? There are a lot of unlikeable people out there & they are portrayed nowhere better than in Dead Mans Shoes. The performances throughout are excellent, even given most are non or part time actors. Toby Kebbell though is sublime as Anthony & the level of emotion & empathy I felt for him was heartbreaking. The film though belongs to Paddy Considines Richard. The unwavering & unflinching remorseless Considine Shows us is chilling & as scary a character i've seen on film ( & he's the 'good guy'!). The scene where the local small time dealer confronts Richard in the bar & the scene where the local kingpin confronts Richard in the street are both superb, his reaction both times chilling. Nitty, gritty, funny & scary, watch it. 10/10
Majikat As powerful a film as ever. This one is a builder, so if you're not convinced by the beginning, the chances are you will be by the end.Perhaps the type of revenge film that append more to the British public than the U.S, as I remember reviews from there, cladding this as a slasher and it certainly isn't that. There are dark humour moments, but this really is about the past catching up.Both Paddy Considine and Toby Kebbel were excellent and the considine/meadows collaboration was a match we'll made.
mattwilde123 'Dead Man's Shoes' is the fourth full-length feature film directed and written by Shane Meadows in 2004. Starring Paddy Considine, it tells the story of an ex-soldier who returns home to a small town in the Midlands seeking revenge on a group of thugs who have terrorised his younger brother. The film, at first, embraces the ultimate act of revenge with dark humour and disturbing violence, but soon turns out to criticise what effect vengeance has on the protagonist. The film questions the role of masculinity in British working-class society by having very different male stereotypes thrown together in a very isolated environment. Not only does the film make a statement about gender roles, but more importantly, it tackles the issue of honour and justice. The audience's allegiances sway dramatically throughout the film as Richard (Considine) becomes more brutal in his execution styles. A similar British film that challenges the audience's perception of who is right is Stanley Kubrick's 'A Clockwork Orange'.On simple viewing of this film, you could say that it is a revenge slasher-flick with plenty of gore; however, I feel that this film is a powerful piece of cinema that is a statement for the immorality of British society and the ideologies it imposes but it also uses Uttoxeter to show the corruption of human nature.
