paulashton001 Minor spoilers contained within but nothing that will affect your movie-going experience. What an original and great multicultural premise for a movie! As a Canadian I had really high hopes for this movie going in! And it lived up to those hopes in the first half of the movie which contained original characters, at least for film in North America, a funny and original premise and an environment rife for some brilliantly novel comedic shenanigans. Annnnnnd then it was like Adam Sandler took over this script and substituted the script for Big Daddy for the entire second half of the film. Cheesy line followed by a cliché court scene followed by cheesy line and a non-surprise surprise ending all conspire to undo all the goodwill and loyalty the movie had earned at the start. Surprisingly, in the end it wasn't typical Indian stereotypes being reinforced that really left a bad taste in my mouth but the stereotypical, somehow still acceptable (why?), demeaning of obese women as an object of ridicule and as nonsexual pariahs that really turned me off about three quarters of the way through this film. It's time the bucket stop being dipped into this particular well of comedy to get laughs at the movies. Hopefully, the audience has outgrown this particular brand of acceptable unacceptable insult. Think harder comedy writers! All of this being said there was redeeming qualities and an undercurrent of potential that really kept me wanting to like this movie and kept me watching until the bitter end. I liked the actors and Kunal Nayyar is really talented comically. This becomes glaringly apparent near the end of the movie when he finally reemerges and attempts to resuscitate this film with some comedic CPR. Sadly though, the movie flat-lined and passed away too early in this viewers opinion.
sonu 007 Dr. Cabbie is a MUST watch as it addresses a serious issue in the light of comedy. Much credit goes to Vinay Virmani, the lead actor. The movie showed the protagonist's failed attempts to get the residency at hospitals, and eventually ended up as a generous and empathetic cab driver doctor. His nature towards human is what endears him to an audience. Certain scenes in the movie very much relates to newly landed immigrants. The oath-reciting scene at climax stays with you long after you leave the theatre. Overall, It was a joy ride that reinforced the belief, "Everything will be all right in the end...if it's not all right then it's not yet the end".
stevepat100 Those who enjoy light hearted romantic com/drams and who may not be enthralled with Bollywood style efforts should run, not walk, to this film. Casting is dead on. The lead, Vinay Virmani was delightful as a Toronto medical fish out of water. His mother, uncle and uncles comedy-relief wife were spot on. I was surprised to see Big Bang's 'Raj' Kuanl Nayyar in his first movie role. I enjoyed watching him as much as he seemed to enjoy making the film. Dance numbers, unlike the Bollywood mold, were left to a huge birthday party (where expected) and one hot, brief dream sequence. The more serious cultural issues were treated with perfect comedy versus serious attention. The only weak link was the wannabe politician bio dad. I did not buy his buffoon comic caricature at all. Who would believe that any wannabe big city mayor would go out of his way to publicize an illegitimate child. He was more a 4th Stooge then a Mr. Evil. That aside, this film was, for me, a total romantic com/dram delight and one I could easily breeze through again. Got to go and spread word of mouth on this limited release gem.
gocole10 "It's not just another movie of a billionaire's son seeking publicity, Vinay Virmani is a natural. The movie clearly addresses the issues and obstacles faced by a foreign immigrant who arrives at Canada with dreams and hope of serving the community. Although I felt that the movie had a bit of Bollywood style and unwanted humor, it didn't affect the message the movie intended to deliver to the audience. Certain scenes makes great sense to the newly landed immigrants like me to see the cultural differences, realities of sustaining in a foreign nation and practices that are not a part of our home culture.Kunal and Palicki's character added flavor to the movie, but entire credit goes to Vinay for the role of Dr.Deepak @ Dr.Cabbie."
