MartinHafer Over the years, I have tried to keep up with IMDb's ever-changing Bottom 100 list. While I love good films, occasionally I like having a laugh by watching completely inept ones...and often the IMDb list is good for a few chuckles. However, I have noticed one thing...many of these lowest rated films really are NOT that bad. Heck, with over 19,000 reviews to my credit, I can think of hundreds of films worse than many of the IMDb entries. Well, there's a reason for this...many films on the list were skewered on "Mystery Science Theater 3000" and so they are more familiar to many other bad films. Plus, I think viewers often mix up a terrible film with one that is very bad but made fun of on the show. So, when I saw "Extra Terrestrial Visitors" was on "MST3000", I decided to find out for myself if it's really that bad. Some other dubious films (such as "Mitchell" and "Girl With Gold Boots" actually turned out to be okay films despite being on the show and on the list. But I also need to locate a version of the movie that wasn't altered by "MST3000" (and this often isn't easy). Fortunately, in a recent search on YouTube, I found an original copy of the 1983 film.Unlike other entries on the list, "Extra Terrestrial Visitors" was originally a French film and was crappily dubbed into English. Because of that, it is possible that the original French version didn't stink quite as badly as the version I saw.According to IMDb, this was originally a film with evil aliens. However, with the success of "ET", they decided to quickly rework the film and include the kid and the now likable alien! This alone would account for making the film a stinker, as this sort of clumsy reworking of the script cannot help but hurt the film. And, it certainly is clumsy having the adult alien out slaughtering folks and the 'cute' (??) baby alien in scenes intended to capture your heart! In fact, it really comes off like they had two separate movies and tried, clumsily, to splice them together. Neither story works well...and the worst of the two clearly is the one with the kid and the baby alien who hatches out of an egg he finds. The alien looks pretty stupid and it's all about as heart warming as a case of indigestion! But the important question to me is whether or not the film is bad enough to be on the Bottom 100 list. I do think it's terrible and before they added the stupid baby alien, it might have actually been watchable. Here, however, it's just a mess...especially when this sweet baby alien starts killing and some horny young adults are tossed into this weird melange. A senseless and stupid film...perhaps bad enough to make the list or at least worth considering for inclusion on the list. As for me, I prefer "Mac and Me" as it's a much bigger budgeted rip- off of "ET" and yet fails on every possible level!
BA_Harrison Clearly inspired by Spielberg's E.T., Extraterrestrial Visitors sees young lad Tommy befriending an alien that hatches from a strange egg he discovers in a cave. 'Trumpy', as the alien is named, is an expressionless, hairy, biped with a rubbery trunk who likes to snort peanuts, play pranks with his supernatural powers, and create slamming beats with the use of popular 80s Milton Bradley computer game Simon. Meanwhile, Trumpy's bigger and far meaner relation is causing havoc in the woods, terrorising a pair of poachers and members of a really bad 80s pop group.Juan Piquer Simón's 1982 slasher Pieces is a classic example of 'so bad, it's good' cinema (wherein a movie transcends its awfulness by being unintentionally hilarious throughout and consequently very enjoyable). The director's next film, Extraterrestrial Visitors, is also absolutely terrible but it fails to pull off the same trick as its predecessor: while there are one or two inept moments that will no doubt raise the occasional smile, the entertainment factor overall is extremely low. Trumpy's silly antics, amusing to begin with, rapidly become irritating, the story is dull, the direction listless, and nearly all of the characters are thoroughly unlikable. For me, the best (i.e. funniest) thing about the whole sorry mess is Piquer Simon's excessive use of smoke for atmospheric effect: the people in this film are completely unfazed by the ever present billowing clouds of the stuff; I know if I saw that much smoke while walking through the woods, I'd think that there was a forest fire and get myself the hell outta there pronto.
Mark Honhorst One thing I noticed about this cheese wedge was that it tried to look like it was taking place in North America even though it was made in Spain: 1- A portrait of George Washington hangs on the wall in the main setting. 2- A picture of Ronald Reagan hangs on the wall in the cabin where the hunter got killed. 3- A 'Sprite'sticker is stuck on the wall of the main setting. 4- One of the soon-to-be-victims comments that if the TV weren't out, at least they'd be able to watch 'Dallas' 5-There's one or two American flags hanging around. 6- The whole thing is basically a ripoff of E.T., an American film. There may be more,I'm not sure.I guess they wanted to make it look more American to attract a bigger audience. I don't think it happened. Thank goodness I watched this with MST3K.I don't think I would've made it without them. I'm sure I'd hate it without them.
oscar-35 *Spoiler/plot- - 1983, Pod People, A self-absorbed pet-loving only child finds a alien's egg nest hidden in the forest and adopts a embryo. The embryo hatches. All the while vacationing swingers get caught in the drama all around them occurring in the same forest vacation location where the boy lives. Some 'slap and tickle' sexual matters occur. Some forest poachers try to capture the alien at their own peril. One by one they are murdered by an alien looking for those humans who disturbed her nest. *Special Stars- Hugo Atral, William Anton, Ocsar Martin, Frank Branana.*Theme- With motherly love, anything can happen in the smoky mountains. *Based on- Folklore*Trivia/location/goofs- Spanish. Maybe better called "Tales of Trumphy", Film was made by French?Spanish production company. The overuse of smoke or 'diffusion' machines in all the forest scenes is spotty at best. It's diffusion overuse ruins this story. The weird alien menace was changed to a lovable alien to try and cash in on the 'E.T.' craze. Was this film is the basis for the Ridley Scott 'Alien' genre films? Not 'E.T.'*Emotion- This is an enjoyable stinker of a film featuring 'Trumphy'. Not only does this film have space aliens, but it is made in a foreign country and dubbed. Those many combinations gives you hours of corny fun.
