oliverkelleycc The start was slow, and the plot seemed to jump around and was hard to follow at times. Often, it threw us into situations without any reason as to why they were there. Some situations were also unnecessary to the plot of the movie. Those are the problems I had, but I appreciated the main character's motive and how he developed his relation with the man who killed his father. The overall character development was thorough as well, and the historical setting as a motive to some actions also fit cohesively. I enjoyed watching this movie, except for a few parts
gracehuethercc ¨Gangs of New York¨ shows a time in U.S. history where the divide within NYC mirrored the divide in the country. The plot was good, but was hard to follow. The high quantity of characters made it them hard to follow. There was also little lead up to some events as the viewer was put into situations with little introduction to the certain situations. Certain scenes were unnecessary the the plot and did not help move the plot forward in any way, Some scenes were also unrealistic and the visual effects became better throughout the movie.Though some points in the plot were unneeded the actors did a fantastic job of moving the plot forward and keeping the very long and complex movie interesting.
poetcomic1 What ruined this for me? Length + Violence. The script was poor and above all 'explanatory' - always telling us about the gangs, the Five Points, the social unrest, the Civil War and the draft, Boss Tweed etc. etc. The ultimate act of imagination would have been to create real 3-dimensional human beings and give them small, human poignant moments. After awhile we are aware that trying to be 'real' it is all unbelievable, unreal. Perhaps it was the filming on the giant indoor sets at Rome's Cinecitta studios that give the film its over-stylized and unconvincing 'look'. With grandiose sets come grandiose set-pieces. Violent set pieces. LOTS of them. Eventually they all run together into one noisy, gory fizzle. I enjoyed Daniel Day-Lewis more as a refined sissy in Room With A View than I did here. Yes, the man can act, but this is a one note performance.
marioyoshi-20550 I had to watch this movie for a project in APUSH with my best friend, and I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this film. Not only was the plot very intriguing, giving me a different look at certain aspects of the time period not touched upon in class, but the recognition of several familiar faces (Such as Leo as Amsterdam, Cameron Diaz as Jenny, and even Brendan Gleeson and Jim Broadbent from the Harry Potter films) kept me on my toes, looking out for others I may recognize as the film progresses. Casting, I felt, was very appropriate for the characters. They seemed to fit the roles so well, I felt. On the other hand, at times I found the plot slightly confusing, and hard to follow, but other than that, it's a masterpiece of a film, with great actors, scenery, and plot.
