srsen (minor spoilers only) Well well well. I went into this expecting a typical torture porn fare and nothing more - but WOW, this film just played with me and sent me places i had no idea i wanted to go - and i loved it for it!The premise was fairly common - couple gets abducted by crazy guy and ends up in his torture lair. Been there, seen that, now just gimme some believable effects and we'll all be done here. But this film, if you can go along with it, shows some surprising details and unique twists and by the closing scenes has you feeling amazingly connected to the whole journey. Its not just a nutjob seeking a blood bath, there's something else going on here, lurking deep below the surface. There's an emotional component which mixes up everything and leaves you in deep thought about exactly what the killer sought from his little exercise.Give this film a chance. Go along with its more unique moments and try to keep up with what the film-maker wanted. You'll either love it or hate it, but if torture porn with a little more depth is what you're after - Grotesque is just the ticket!
rabitbait most disturbing film and banned by the BBFC, because in their wisdom this will do harm to viewers? give me a break and thank god for the internet. the only thing banning this did in the uk is make more people interested in it.to start the film may seem a bit short on the plot and has been criticised for it. this may seem true at first but actions speak louder than words and boy does the action hurt.we start with a young couple who are clubbed into unconsciousness and then wake up in a dungeon strapped to surgical boards and gagged. they are then tortured asking how far they will go for each other. that's pretty much it for set up and plot. but if you stick with it there is development and thought behind what is going on and it is revealed slowly. now don't get me wrong what happen to the couple is nasty and cruel but watching it from start to finish I felt the film did what it did well. the ending is slightly over the top but reveals a key thing about the torturer and gives more depth to the film.is it the best thing since slide bread? no, but the effects are done well, the Cinematography is executed well and the acting is top notch. most disturbing film? no, just another horror film that has a bit more going on. if you want gore try something else this film is not that bad if you want disturbing try watching Lars von Trier Breaking the waves.
billcr12 A young couple are shown on their first date at a restaurant. They smile and exchange pleasantries, both are quite shy and when they walk together on the side walk, they are assaulted and abducted by a stranger. The couple find themselves securely restrained in a basement. A man begins the fun by sticking a screwdriver into the male victims stomach, then he cuts his tongue and rapes the girl. He cuts off her nipples and one arm. After further cutting of various body parts, he moves the suffering couple to what looks like a hospital room and cares to their wounds with medical like expertise. After some much needed recuperation, it's back to the dungeon for more mutilation. He cuts out the mans intestines and strings them to hook and thus begins a contest of endurance and loyalty to his date. If I haven't discouraged your curiosity yet, well watch the film to find out how it ends.
Michael_Elliott Grotesque (2009) *** (out of 4)Extremely graphic, depraved and vile film from Japan about teenagers Kazuo (Hiroaki Kawatsure) and Aki (Tsugumi Nagasawa) who are on their first date when they're kidnapped by a sadistic surgeon (Shigeo Osako) who takes them back to his house, ties them up and begins to torture them. As a life-long horror fan it seems every few one, two or three new movies cause a stir but when you finally get around to watching them it's clear that it was all hype and they're usually disappointing. Over the past few weeks I had heard a lot of GROTESQUE and I must say that director Koji Shiraishi has made a very brutal film that lives up to everything that has been said about it. The movie is a vile piece of trash but there's no question that it's well-made and certainly effective. I guess you could say that this is Japan's answer to American series like SAW and HOSTEL but those films don't have anything on this. The torture scenes, as you'd expect, are extremely graphic in detail so I'd say that 98% of people out there aren't going to be able to stomach them. I'm a pretty jaded horror fan and I've seen some incredibly brutal films but this here would certainly rank right near the top. The sexual violence in the film includes an incredibly humiliating situation where the girl is raped in a way that I won't ruin here but it's certainly one of the most unpleasant things you're going to see. The torture devices include a chainsaw, eye gouging and a couple scenes to the male anatomy that is going to have male viewers turning their heads like children. At just 75-minutes the film really doesn't waste any time building up a story or trying the stretch out the characters. In all honesty this is a good thing because a film like this doesn't need any boring backstory and in fact the worst thing about the movie is the one flashback introduction to the two teens. The performances by the three actors are extremely good and very believable. Both victims really make you feel the pain they're going through and Osako is so cold and chilling that he's certainly a character you'll never get out of your mind. GROTESQUE is thankfully going to appeal to very few people and it's hard to recommend except to those who want to see how far you can be pushed with violence and torture. It's hard to stomach but it's effective.
