g-bodyl Guess Who, which is a loose remake of the 1967 classic "Guess Who's Coming To Dinner", is a better film than I anticipated, but still not all that great. It's more of a mediocre film that has some good laughs at time and subtle chemistry between the two leads. All of these comedies that tend to be about race(black vs. white) are generally unfunny, but this film does have some funny moments.Kevin Sullivan's film is about a young couple named Theresa and Simon who just got engaged. Theresa takes her fiancée to meet her parents and they, especially her father, Percy is taken aback on how much different Simon is from them. That leads to tension and all sorts of fun things happening. The acting is not too shabby. As mentioned previously, the actors have some subtle chemistry. I always happened to be a fan of Bernie Mac so I was happy to see him here since he was the best thing about the movie. I'm not a fan of Ashton Kutcher and probably will never be, but I did feel sympathetic for his character.Overall, this is a decent movie if you can look past the racial themes and more unfunny moments than funny moments. That being said, there are some good jokes and my favorite scene is when Simon meets the grandfather for the first time around the dinner table. All-in-all, not a bad film but could have been better. I rate this film 7/10.
graham-bristol Unbelievable. For a film made in 2005 this is so far behind the times. It is inappropriate, small-minded and offensive. In case the film-makers haven't noticed, racism is not an offence only white people can commit. The attitude portrayed by Bernie Mac's character is the same disgraceful behaviour that the human race has fought so hard to overcome."Guess Who's Coming To Dinner", on which this film is loosely based, was made in the mid- 1960s, and even then reaction was mixed. Surely we've moved on. Surely we live in a more enlightened time.Ban this film.
Neil Welch This film merges the embarrassed meeting the in-laws thread of comedy with the black vs white culture shock school of thought, and does a decent job of blending them. There are a lot of laughs together with a subtext about colour not mattering, while at the same time trading on those differences, thus enabling the film to have its cake and eat it.It's not a classic film and never will be, but the principals all do very well in delivering characters who are believable and convey touchingly the emotional consequences of some of the problems which occur.Well worth watching.
akronactor Heres an idea for this kind of movie- instead of the guy who's about to meet his girlfriends parents being a spineless wimp who really wants to be accepted by his future in laws, how about a movie where the guy actually has enough courage to stand up for himself, and tell his future father in law that hes not gonna put up with stuff like being hooked up to a lie detector or sleeping in the same bed with him? Another question- how come none of the characters like Bernie Mac's from this movie have ever been accused of incest ? For most of this movie Simon Green is such a pushover that he really does not make a sympathetic character. Bernie Mac basically just plays the same arrogant character he always does.
