apostonk Gregory Peck spent time preparing for this role by doing a character study with my grandfather. My grandfather was a small town sheriff in Gainesboro, Tennessee in the 1960s and 1970s. Peck walks and dresses just like my grandfather did in his role. My step-father helped work on the truck used in the opening scene of the movie. I finally located the DVD version of the movie last year and my family loves watching it to point out all of the locations we grew up with. It was shot on location in Jackson and Putnam counties in middle Tennessee. Gregory Peck is my all-time favorite actor. There's a photo somewhere of him with my grandfather that I saw once and I would love to find it and have a copy.
pbsnyderyho I recently viewed this film for the second time, having seen it perhaps twenty years ago. I found out why I remembered it fondly. A fairly true-to-life depiction of a back-hills country town and it's people. The characters are strong and played superbly by the great cast. The cinematography is wonderfully nostalgic. It makes you feel as if you are there, living the story. I remembered numerous details from this movie which made me realize how closely I paid attention the first time around. I've seen dozens of movies in the last year and can't remember half as much about them. Modern movies offer great things with special effects and bigger than life color and sound. Movies like this one are timeless classics without any of the production bells and whistles. Just a good if not great, honest movie.
lohman48 I just saw this movie for the first time. How many men have experienced the emotions of a man like Peck played? How many men in a stale and loveless marriage, or just full of desire felt this way towards a woman who deep down inside of themselves knew they could not have for long. A man felt trapped and worst of all in a community full of passion for judgment. I think the scene showing directions to the several churches said a lot. With all the religion around him where could Peck share his feelings? He was getting set up by Tuesday Wells all the way. I know it brought back a memory to me, I could feel his pain. Now it is over for me I thought him the fool, but who am I to judge as I once was just as guilty. The movie has more social commentary than it is given credit for. It is the man who is getting hurt not the woman. But nobody cares about men. All men should see the scene where Wells puts the hay fork into Peck's chest and remember it. As far as the movie itself goes. It was all right.
tom_jeffords Warning! Contains Spoilers! I Walk the Line is a very well done movie. The director superbly catches the growing tension of the characters; the moonshiner, the sheriff, his deputy, and his family. The story itself details the descent of an honest small-town sheriff from the straight and narrow to corruption, adultery, and murder. All because of his affair with a moonshiners' daughter. This descent is disturbing because of its intensity and the "There but for the Grace of God, go I factor." NB For the more sensitive viewers there are hints of pedophilia (the moonshiner's daughter is portrayed as very young)and incest. It should be rated R.
