Diddisnap I only recently stumbled upon "In the Land of Women", eight years after release, on cable. Why did it take so long? It was half-way into the movie and I quickly learned that I was hooked and must- watch- from- the- beginning. Like many prior reviews, I also thought it was going to be a silly romantic comedy. I would like to deduct several points just for the horrible trailer. A terrible insight to what the movie is really about. I quickly learned it was a great drama that put me in tears. Of course I will say that I tear-up fairly easily, which I think has only gotten worse with age. I think this is due to more years of life experience. I "get it." I can relate to what some of the characters are going through because I have either been through it myself or know someone who has. This movie is a well-written, well-acted drama that is simple enough to not put into dramatic devastation, meaning, I didn't walk away feeling emotionally devastated. I walked away from the movie feeling that things were going to be okay, more than okay. I don't know what it is about Kristen Stewart's awkward acting. It's definitely her signature. I found her a perfect fit for Bella in Twilight. She was awkward, tough but feminine, and pretty but not a bombshell which is refreshing for a movie like that. I think she will only get better as she gets older and she is original. Meg Ryan also does wonderfully as the mother, as well as Adam Brody as the main character, Carter.I would suggest searching for this movie on cable, record it, and give it a try when you have a quiet moment. It's one of those movies that put life into perspective.
moonspinner55 Writer-director Jon Kasdan puts this glossy, superficial comedy-drama together like a preconceived jigsaw puzzle. You can even count the scenes like pieces: actress dumps writer, writer discusses life with disaffected mom, writer goes to live with dying grandma, writer gets involved with unfulfilled housewife across the street, housewife has a lump in her breast, housewife's daughter can't relate to mom, housewife's husband is having an affair that nobody cares about. Meanwhile, Kasdan's dialogue sounds like it's been filtered through the mismatched scenes of a nighttime soap, an endless stream of self-conscious confessions dotted with a writer's in-jokes. We in the audience have nothing much to wait for except the teenage girl's declaration of devotion to her "cold, distant" mother, the grandma's demise, and the young man's independence from the starlet whom he never really loved. Cast is talented yet not really convincing in these roles. The film isn't even efficiently made; it's a scattershot attempt at bringing together the hearts of these emotionally-impaired people, scored with rock tunes by Huey Lewis, INXS and Bruce Springsteen. Commercial interruptions will fit right in. * from ****
Raul Faust Wow, what a nice little flick! Carter Webb is an unique character that oscillates between being the good boy and the womanizer; either way, he's likable in both situations, and male spectator will surely feel identified with him, one time or another. He deals with different kind of females. An hypochondriac grandmother, an immature teenager and a problematic woman. The grandma is indeed funny, and I loudly laughed in the "I hadn't eaten anything in three weeks" scene; it exposed with sincerity how old people act when they feel lonely and helpless. Even if the portrayal of such character can have a serious connotation, I couldn't help laughing at her manners. The directing and editing are sometimes weird, and I noticed an overuse of editing during conversations, but that doesn't spoil the (many) qualities of the film. The story, for example, is EXTREMELY original, and so are the conversations and the problems that characters deal with. Adam Brody has an amazing performance, and I'm really surprised that I haven't ever seen him before. In some scenes he remembered me of Axl from "The Middle". "In the Land of Women" is, without a doubt, a different movie from anything you've seen, and proves that a low-budget project can be as satisfying (or more) as a Hollywood blockbuster. Give it a try!
Sony Peter i honestly think many of the comments written already about this movie is one-sided. to put in the right way, its both. its a nice 'cute' movie. its fresh and as someone put it, "will make you feel wishing that movie never ends" same time as you finish watching this movie, you will definitely have many question about some things. in extreme cases, "what the hell just happened?."(i personally asked that myself). But in no way it means that movie is boring or not worth watching. it is a nice movie with a theme. Meg Ryan did well as expected. the best thing about this movie is that its kept up its thread well to the end (not till climax though) and casting was excellent. this movie have got more potential. worth watching. you will love it
