yeodawg Zack is prone to VIOLENT tendencies because he witnessed his entire family slain by a "STAKE LAND" type monster as a use and was helpless to do anything about it. Now struggling to maintain a job and stay in college he does an odd job for his professor (ROBERT ENGLUND of Freddie Krueger fame). This job unleashes a DEMON from the bowels of hell that infects and possesses the professor. He turns his eyes turn black and he goes back t the college snatching up lil co-eds and IDUNNO because I turned it off. I was tired of no monsters being slain. The professor would go to school act normal and then go home to his haunted house get re-infected in another strange way and go back to the school and be normal. There were great production values with this movie a good cast and supporting. But it didn't do anything or go anywhere. I would've loved to find out the MONSTER SLAYER was the monster and the infected were the slayer or something. I turned the damn thing off and watched the brewers lose.
MBunge I've seen a lot of movies that were pretty good right up until an awful ending. Jack Brooks: Monster Slayer is the first one I've ever seen where the ending is pretty good, but everything up until that sucked really hard.Jack Brooks (Trevor Matthews) is a plumber with an anger management problem. His family was killed by a monster in the woods when Jack was a boy and it's left him with a lot of undirected rage. Jack is seeing a counselor about his emotional problems. He's also got an incredibly naggy girlfriend and is taking a night school science class. Jack's professor (Robert Englund) gets possessed by a demon and after the film fiddles around for a looooong time with Englund chewing up the scenery, Jack eventually has to save his classmates from their demonic instructor and discover his destiny in the world.Let me start with the good thing about this movie. The last 25 minutes or so when Jack FINALLY starts slaying monsters is corny and cheesy, with fight choreography straight out of a high school play and a supernatural beast that looks like H. R. Puffinstuff's version of Jabba the Hutt. It's also relatively fun. Do you remember those TV shows from the 1990s - Hercules: The Legendary Journeys and Xena: Warrior Princess? Those shows were created by horror filmmaker Sam Rami and the good part of Jack Brooks: Monster Slayer comes close to what it would have been like if Rami had tried to create another TV show starring Ash from the Evil Dead movies. It's melodrama that completely embraces larger-than-life silliness.Unfortunately, the first 60 minutes of this film are lame and poorly done. Jack wanders from pointless scene to pointless scene while vain attempts at humor are hurled at the audience. And while the title character is treading in stagnant water, Robert Englund is doing his own one-man-show as the Professor. If you just watched the middle part of this film, you'd swear that Englund was the star of it. From scenes going on too long to characters who stand around waiting for something to happen to dialog that sounds like bad improv, it all has an amateurish quality to it.If you're a fan of Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, Xena: Warrior Princess and the Evil Dead films, you might enjoy watching the last half of this movie. I can't think of anyone on Earth who might enjoy the first half. Jack Brooks: Monster Slayer might have made a decent first episode for a syndicated TV series if you edited it down. As a feature film, even a direct-to-DVD flick, it's a failure.
anthony-727 From the point of budget 2.5m CAD isn't very much when you look at the animatronics, puppetry in this film, that alone being the reason for the 9 week shoot. I was really keen to see this film and had hoped to catch it when it came out, instead got it on DVD recently. My main problem is it's just not funny at all, it's better than Tenacious D which hasn't got a funny bone in it's body. But this was a truly disappointing film.Trevor Matthews is a very strong physically performer, but his acting sucks! Rachel Skarsten gives what is possibly one of the most irritating and none funny performances I have ever seen. The only really BIG star in this is David Scott who's artwork for the monsters is fab! His special effects work is the main reason this film is worth watching, loved the Cyclops and Troll and and the Prof Monster was straight out of the Henson library. If you watch this it won't be the biggest waste of time, but if you are looking to see this for a great Horror Comedy Romp... Don't bother.
Paul Andrews Jack Brooks: Monster Slayer starts as a young Jack Brooks (Evan Gilchrist) witnesses the murder of his younger sister, mother & Father by some Werewolf type monster. Jump forward many years later & Jack Brooks (Trevor Matthews) is now a lowly plumber in his mid twenties with a pretty but irritating girlfriend Eve (Rachel Skarsten) & a very bad temper. While at night college chemistry Professor Gordon Crowley (Robert Englund) ask's Jack to take a look at at his plumbing at his new house which isn't working properly. While at home that night Professor Crowley is possessed by the black heart of an ancient demon & starts to undergo a transformation into a grotesque monster who decides to terrorise Crowley's pupils. Jack steps up to the plate & takes charge of the situation & becomes Jack Brooks, Monster Slayer as he tries to stop the demon...This Canadian production was co-written & directed by John Knautz & is quite a fun little comedy horror that certainly has it's moments most of which come in the amusing last thirty odd minutes. The script has very distinctive character's with Jack himself an odd but somewhat likable hero, he reminded me of the Ash character from the Evil Dead films. Once the monster makes an appearance & things kick in Jack Brooks: Monster Slayer is quite a lot of fun & quite energetic but the first hour or so although odd & watchable isn't all that good & fairly forgettable. As a whole Jack Brooks: Monster Slayer feels a little empty for it's first hour while the last thirty minutes feels a little too packed which gives it an uneven feel. While I did like the film I didn't love it, there's a lack of gore & not much of a story behind the monster or why it hasn't possessed anyone before or even what it is. There's nothing deep or meaningful here & the wraparound segments hint at some sort of ongoing series of films but there are enough good intentions & enough silly horror moments here to keep most entertained I would have thought. Good but not brilliant. The film is very well well made with a nice slick look to it, the silly comedy moments are usually mixed in with the horror to dilute it & it's hard to take the film seriously. It's not scary although there are one or two gross out moments, there's not much actual gore apart from a bitten hand & some blood splatter. The special effects are pretty good considering, there's no CGI here & it's all good old fashion on set special make-up effects & rubber tentacles. The fat bloated monster at the end intentionally looks both gross & somewhat daft.Shot in Ottawa in Ontario in Canada this looks really good & with nice production values & good special effects, it seems like some money was actually spent on it & it was made by makers who cared about the finished product. The acting is quite good & everyone plays it straight to amusing effect, king of the horror cameos Freddy Krueger himself Robert Englund has a slightly larger role than he has been getting of late here.Jack Brooks: Monster Slayer would have been a great film if the first hour had been as energetic & fun as the last thirty odd minutes, as it is is isn't so it ain't. Not too bad but nothing amazing, worth a rent but maybe not a purchase. The IMDb lists Jack Brooks: Monster Slayer II (2010) as currently in production.
