OllieSuave-007 There's more fun and laughter in this sequel as Rowan Atkinson returns as MI7 agent Johnny English, tasked to help stop an assassination plot against the Chinese premier. Filmed with fast-paced action and endless gags and humor, this film will send you loads of laughs and pure entertainment. The bumbling Johnny English teams up with the lesser bumbling Agent Tucker (Daniel Kaluuya) and the charming therapist Kate Sumner (Rosamund Pike); their chemistry were quite hilarious. There's more action and edge-of-your-seat excitement in this one, from the Asian cleaning lady assassin to the mysterious key that is the center of all the chaos. Overall, a very entertaining film - tastefully done gags with a good mixture of action and suspense. Grade A
stormhawk2018 Many times the sequels of some movies are so bad or inferior to the original that one wants to upload the note to the original, and it will not be the first or the last time that gives me that feeling. With the first I laughed a lot more than this one, because they bet on a humor that extracted the full potential of a Rowan Atkinson in a state of grace, not to say it was much simpler. With this they decided to bet on the comic action and some gags very forced, turning the spy of the first part into a fool, and not that innocent spy to which everything went wrong and concealed so well that I remember the original.Even though I have scenes capable of giving you a smile, I personally take the first one.But if the fun moments are much looser than those of the first part, which is to say, the worst of the sequel is its plot. In Johnny English 1, we had a baddie, John Malkovich, who wanted to steal the crown jewels and become King to carry out a malicious plan. A bullshit yes, but the plot must be simple if what you really want is to make a comedy of this type. In Johnny English 2, however, there are so many characters and stories that you do not even know what they are (even Gillian Anderson from "X-Files" does not reach that category, with a fake British accent). That if infiltrated here that if infiltrated there, that if the drug to make one do or stop doing do not know what the Chinese for God knows what, an old Asian appears and disappears and Mozambique went by.Do you remember the first one when he is mistaken of a building? Or when he teaches the archbishop's ass to the whole country? And when he mistakenly places a DVD of him dancing in the bathroom in front of half the world just after? (a memorable setback) Do you remember Natalie Imbruglia ?, and the music of Robbie Williams in the final credits ?.Yeah, maybe he had the bar too high, but he did not become bad at all. It happens to be one of those sequels that serve to claim the original, as the sequel to "Independence Day". At least you can see Rosamund Pike for a while.P.S.: For the reviewer "mogambo", yeah sure, this sequel was good for you because you were appealed to the young actresses born between 1989 and 1990, years before the Barcelona Olympics (this movie was premiered before the London Olympics). If so, go to date Spanish girls.
cogeorge-17949 Despite my addiction to his movies, I'm quite disappointed by this. Great casting, but rather undesirable acting. The movie was funny, but there was so much of overemphasized comedy, which left me staring at the screen if something funnier would happen. Some of the supposedly unnecessary funny scenes could have done with a little improvement, and made less juvenile. Two things tend to make me mad at this movie, and questions arise from them which are yet unanswered in my mind, the foremost of which is why Johnny would be able to resist a super hypnotic drug whilst the Mozambican dude couldn't. Fine, he recalled his mind adventures in Tibet, but that's a lame reason because I'm sure the drug washed off his mind and reason. Then we have the scene where Johnny was "kissed back to life." Really? Is this a Disney fairy-tale or an Arabian Nights folklore? The movie had its many funny moments, including Atkinson's cat-and-mouse chase with the Hong Kong assassin all the way down to Pegasus' house, and Atkinson's meeting with the MI7 board. But these moments seemed to consistently decline as the movie progressed till comedy nearly turned to mere drama. You could start this movie laughing hysterically, but end up feeling indifferent. Quite unexpected from my comic hero, Atkinson. The first movie was okay for me, a sequel wasn't necessary unless it would be, at least, as good as the first. Watch if you're a Rowan Atkinson fan, you might find it interesting enough.
dromasca The combination of high-tech thrillers a la James Bond and the so English humor of Rowan Atkinson worked fine for me in the original 'Johnny English' and work even better in the 'Johnny English Reborn' sequel released eight years later, which I got to see only now. If I am to look for the perfect comedy entertainment I would go for something like this because it succeeds to be funny and anti political-correct, while keeping some logic and sending references to the original movies it is inspired from, without taking itself too much seriously at any moment. If I am to decide what are the reasons JE works for me better than other similar comedy-parody movies I would of course first of all mention Rowan Atkinson. He is himself, meaning Mr. Bean whatever the role he plays - a combination of Britishness and irreverence, a walking gaffer and catastrophes generator, and yet - a warm human being. The greatest comical character one can identify with since Stan Laurel. The second reason are the scripts of the Johnny English films. They actually have logic. Of course, it's Brit logic, it's movies logic, but if you really put the script of the two Johnny English movies near the stories of most of the James Bond films, not only you will find them similar, but English may won many of the credibility contests. This second and I hope not last installment of Johnny English has also the great advantage to bring back to screen one of my mostly beloved actresses, Gillian Anderson of X-Files fame. Did I say that was my preferred TV-series of all times. I did and now you know it all too. I hope that director Oliver Parker (or somebody else) will go on with the JE series, and that Gillian will become Atkinson/English's Q for a long time.
