Gurce A childhood favourite of mine. I've now had a chance to reflect on it as an adult and can see that the film has many wonderful messages for children on discovering their identity, to explore, try new things, handle the criticism/prejudice/conceit of others, the perils of a life consisting purely of work and no pleasure, the pitfalls of believing that the purchase of possessions will make you happy, the over-hyped status of city-life (maybe the grass on the other side isn't as green as you thought it was once you get there). As a cartoon, I still think it's elegantly drawn, Katy is chubby, sweet, adorable and perfectly voiced. The songs are cheerful and bouncy, with Katy's "Someday" song standing out by a mile, a very sweet, emotional song, sung with a lot of conviction, it always gets me a little teary-eyed.Some of the other songs seem to suffer a little due to the English pronunciation being a little off. I was getting the impression that some songs were sung by the Spanish voice-cast singing English words but pronouncing them like Spanish words.I guess that's why as a child I couldn't really catch the meaning of some of the other songs. That's a minor shame, as I now realise that the lyrics of these other songs also conveyed strong messages too.It might be a worthwhile endeavour for someone to contribute English subtitles for this film one day. If I can spare some time one day, I might give it a try.On the whole though, still a terrific film, and one I hope to show my children.
Mare1130 Katy the caterpillar has been one of the best animated films ever made. Even today, the story is so moving, so tender, so sweet, it reaches every heart. I have a daughter who is only 18 months and she just adores this film. The story is so simple that it is great! a caterpillar who wants to become a "flying flower", and goes trough life finding her own destiny despite all the comments made from her sisters. It gives a great message as to always pursue your dreams.I was only three when it was shown in Mexico, and I still have that tape when it was shown on TV. I wish they show both films again, this one and the second part (Katy, kiki y koko)
Kargemari I was born in 1983 so I was only 1 when it was released but I seriously remember watching this movie over and over as a child. It was one of my favorite movies. I still have my tape that it was recorded on and I am so glad that I've kept it all these years. My daughter is now 21 months old and she just watched it for the first time yesterday. I haven't seen it for many many years now but I fell in love with it all over again. I would love to get a real copy instead of my old scratchy version that was recorded in the 80s. The technology wasn't great but it had a beautiful story and to me was very inspirational and something I want my daughter to grow up watching compared to some of the garbage that's on TV now days. I think it's a great metaphor for life and how we can all aspire to do great things.
Clariztbel Wow!!! I'm just shocked... I saw this movie when I was about 8 years old, and I have just discovered it wasn't from the Disney Studios. You must understand that for a girl that age at that time, knowing the difference was not important. I remember seeing it like 20 times, I just adored it. The story of Katy was so appealing for me. I loved the end when she finally became a beautiful butterfly. I know it is no "Bug's Life" or "Finding Nemo", but for an 8 year old girl in Panama in 1984 it was wonderful animated entertainment.
