Ross622 Garry Marshall's "Overboard" is one of the funniest movies of the 1980's that I have seen since "Planes, Trains, and Automobiles" in the very same year. The movie stars Goldie Hawn as Joanna Proffitt a mother who becomes spoiled and loses her memory and has to deal with a lot of motherly problems with all of her sons and her husband Dean (Kurt Russell) who acts like a child and doesn't want to be too strict with his sons. Not only is it funny it is also a very effective love story with very good performances from both Hawn and Russell. another thing the movie does is not focus on Hawn as a spoiled woman but the movie focuses on two important things throughout the course of the movie, the fist thing being that a family may sometimes feel like they hate each-other when they don't on the inside, and the second thing being that a marriage only works when you choose the right person to marry. This movie is also ranked (to me personally) as one of the best comedies of all time along with "Some Like it Hot" (1959), "Ball of Fire" (1941), "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" (1986), "Planes, Trains, and Automobiles" (1987), and "Ed Wood" (1994). this is a movie that I happen to think that a lot of kids of all ages will happen to enjoy, and this was a fun movie to watch and is worth watching over and over again.
Predrag The concept and the plot lines were funny and unique. The contrast between the working family and the ultra rich one, the ending where she chooses to have a life where she makes a difference instead of just wasting time, and he values her as she deserves to be valued in the end. There are parts of the movie that could have been better; some of the supporting roles were not done all that well. Although the story is kind of predictable it still is nice to watch. Not alone due the great chemistry between Kurt Russel and Goldie Hawn is worth looking at, but also how Goldies character changes from über-posh and spoiled brat to down to earth and loving wife."Overboard" is a really enjoyable fun rollicking film and enough if taken on its own unambitious terms. Hawn is a hoot, especially in the opening scenes, and she and Russell have great on screen chemistry. The film itself is a mishmash, a sort of warmed over sitcom that has just a hint of the smarmy in its main conceit. By no means is it the best when it comes to romantic comedies but it is a cheerful romantic comedy with that 80's style.Overall rating: 8 out of 10.
Davis P Overboard is kinda cute, sure it's predictable and formulaic, but it's still somewhat entertaining. Goldie and Kurt have great chemistry, that includes offscreen too ;). They work really well in the movie together. Goldie hawn really plays the spoiled rich b***h card well in the first part, then transitions well into someone completely different. Kurt is funny, sexy when he needs to be, and romantic when he needs to be. The sex scene was filmed well, and it was nice and romantic. There are times when the gags get a bit tired and worn, so that's really my only complaint. The rest of the film I liked pretty well, it's just that they needed to cut down some on the over the top cheesy old gags. 6/10.
JaydoDre The Taming of the Shrew. How many productions have copied that Shakespeare's story? Well, Shakespeare's story did for one, as this plot had already been in existence before he got his hands on it, probably for a long long time. It is the story of a woman who is a b*tch at first, gets rough-handled by a man, which turns her into a good girl, which allows her and the man fall in love with each other in the process. This would probably be torn limb from limb by feminists today and they would have some point, as the plot does sound a bit abusive and Stockholm-syndromy. In fact, Overboard's story is a particularly edgy rendition of that plot because, even though an accident leads Goldie Hawn's character to fall overboard and lose her memory, the man in question acquires control over her through illicit ways.So if the story was already a bit cliché, on top of it, the movie has a standard romantic comedy structure to it with a liar-reveal bit at the end, when Kurt's actions are brought to light and the woman has to listen to a sad music soundtrack for a little bit to figure out that she forgives him. This is not a spoiler by the way. Unless, you have lived under a rock since birth, you know how it ends. It cannot possibly come as a surprise. With all that considered, this film is all the more praiseworthy for taking a worn-out formula and making it so shiny and fun. This movie is genuinely funny and smart, with good comedic timing. Despite its story, it does not come off as offensive, a bit sappy perhaps, but still cute.It is one of Kurt Russel's best performances and his character's many kids are adorable rather than annoying as many movie kids can be.The camera work is alright, though there is no reason for the cameraman to do anything spectacular or notable since this is a down-to-earth film centered on characters. In short, the movie's main flaw is that it is simple and unoriginal. Nonetheless, it is definitely recommended if you just want a heartwarming comedy.
