mwcanadian-99023 Honestly, this isn't a really bad movie, but it's also not a really good movie. If you seen it on Mystery Science Theatre 3000 then you likely liked it much better. the plot is actually really good and really creepy. The plot is centered around 2 people. the actor and actress who play them are honestly, not that good and in my book, they are the worst part of the actors in this movie. i know they were supposed to play dumb clones, but they were just forgettable. honestly, the best acting came from the two known actors in Dick Sargent and Peter Graves.Anyways, the plot was around a person called Richard, who accidentally bumped into a woman called Lena. you quickly find out that they are controlled clones and shouldn't have met and when told of the problem Dr. Jamison (Dick Sargent) decided he would see what would happen with this, which would end up hurting them as Richard becomes curious about the world he lives in and of course he becomes curious about "America." Clonus is ran by the doctors and guides there, who are working for a guy called Walker, and the doctors and guides teach these clones while also having them exercise almost non stop it seems to get them ready for "America." what the clones don't realize is that America isn't what they think it is. i won't get into the plot after that because that's actually one of the most interesting parts of this movie. the acting from Dick Sargent and Peter Graves was awesome and i also liked the acting from the guy who could likely play a perfect Mario. Dick Sargent and the guy i call Mario were clear cut villains who hid their intentions well from the clones, but when you seen them, you knew they were just pure evil. Peter Graves on the other hand was the wolf in sheep's clothing to not only the clones, but also his own family and even to the audience. he came off as the nice guy politician, who also had a clear evil intention. he was gold in this movie and helped this movie. i feel that if this movie was re-made with a better budget and better actor and actress to play Richard and Lena that it would be highly successful because the plot is actually really interesting and creepy.
haildevilman The 70's seemed to be chock full of guys with new ideas in the horror/sci-fi field. Or new ways to show old ones. This wasn't too bad really. Summer camp full of clones of people that don't know they're clones yet. Why keep them around? In case the genuine article needs a new organ/limb. Peter Graves and Dick Seargent (That's the second Darren gang) slum it here slightly in an attempt to dignify the film. The rest of the troupe weren't bad....maybe a bit too inexperienced. But that's low budget for you. Some fear builds as the film progresses when it slowly dawns on everyone that this is basically a human harvesting operation. At the time this was released it was probably LOTS more shocking. And in a bit of censorship....one of the original video box covers showed a woman on a mortuary slab with her arms dangling down. Actually no...the original had the arms lopped off. The new (in the 80's video boom era) re added the arms. Anyone got a copy of the chopped arms? You may have a collectors item.I saw this in the said era of its vid release. Liked it fine....but I wonder what it looks like these days.
MARIO GAUCI I wasn't aware of this low-budget sci-fi effort before its SE DVD release on R1 from Mondo Macabro; while I've amassed – and been impressed with – a considerable number of their releases, I somehow never got around to acquiring this…even after all the publicity the film received when the people behind it sued the makers of THE ISLAND (2005) for plagiarism! The film was fairly prescient for its time with its concern about the cloning of human beings – here linked with a struggle for survival as a select few aim for immortality (shades of the far superior SECONDS [1966]), and with a typically dystopian view of the futuristic (and secluded) cloning centre. While the handling is unassuming for the most part, the latter stages notch up reasonable suspense as the hero breaks out of the facility and goes out to the 'Promised Land' (America, of course) to seek answers to his questions which the 'phone booth' specially devised for this purpose seems reluctant to reply… I don't recall THE ISLAND (which was offered as an in-flight program while traveling from London to Los Angeles in November 2005!) enough to note just how much of PARTS was actually ripped off; suffice to say, though, that here we also get a blonde female clone who becomes the protagonist's accomplice/lover. Unfortunately, both leads are pretty bland – which rather lessens audience involvement in their plight (though it does contrive a downbeat ending which was pretty much a requisite of the cynical 1970s); however, a couple of veteran 'name' actors (Peter Graves and Keenan Wynn) turn up in the cast and they're given important roles to play – Graves as a politician involved in the conspiracy and Wynn as an elderly man who helps the hero lift the lid off it.All in all, it's not too bad – the recurring images of bodies in plastic bags are undeniably effective – but hardly constituting a minor classic of the genre…which is perhaps why Jerry Bruckheimer and Michael Bay thought they were safe in bringing its intriguing plot up-to-date without the need to acknowledge the earlier film!
Thomas D. Gutierrez (VoxMoose) It's a solid science fiction story that borrows heavily from pieces like Logan's Run, Brave New World, Soylent Green, and THX1138. Although the production value is rather low, the work is an honest creative effort. The movie is enjoyable, but you have to heavily rescale expectations. It is easy to put on the MST3K goggles because cultural (late 70s made-for-TV style) and special effects limitations make it feel worse than it really is. The acting isn't great, but still tops the Star Wars Prequels in that respect. Overall, as a science fiction fan, and given the poor rating on the IMDb, I found myself pleasantly surprised.
