I could not help giving this movie a 10/10. As a mother with a son with autism this movie gave me so much hope for the future not only for my son yet for my niece who also has autism. It's about time that Autism is brought to light to the mainstream public since most don't understand it or don't even know about it.
Dakota Fanning nailed the part of Wendy & her autism. The not making eye contact, looking at pictures of people to put faces to moods. I went through that with my son yet at a much younger age (he's 23 now & still struggles). Not only watching Wendy have a job gives me hope for my son & niece since neither of them are as high in the autism spectrum as the character Wendy.
Every autistic child/adult normally has (at least) one thing that they are exceptionally good at. In fact autistic children will score genius on I.Q. tests. While Wendy's is Star Trek & writing, my so excells with computers & also with computer games, & my niece is already a prodigy when it comes to graphic novel art, & drawing characters on a computer at the age of 12. Her Dad just graduated in the field of graphic design for computer games so he gave her all of his school equipment that he used & she's almost surpassed him without any education instruction.
This movie shows an array of not just the difficulties with living with autism yet how far some might be willing to go out of their comfort zone to achieve their dream.

Please stand by deviates from the typical movie by telling a story. Instead of using a basic formula of dangers or enemies this movie flows much in the same way that real life can.Much like movies people are often seen as being simple, and easy to categorize. Because this movie breaks those bonds and steps outside of the lines portraying a person rather than a caricature it would seem not everyone gets it. Scenes such as the mugging are rather telling. The ipod has more value, but the notebook is a coping tool she needs that would have no real value to anyone else.So many movies seem to portray a fairy tale where everything is perfect or becomes perfect. Please stand by shows a struggle with deeper meaning meant for a thinking audience with much less flash. Pieces seem to fit together much like a puzzle showing deeper themes right down to the man in the hospital talking about his father.I watched it with a friend, and at the end she said "It's a shame she didn't win, but it's good because it's more realistic that way." My reply was that she didn't win the contest, but she won everything else. After her experience her sister managed enough trust to let her hold the baby, and she herself found enough trust to be able to touch her sister. Others reading the script actually began understanding some of the connections. The "speck of light" was just trying to find a place where she belonged. Sometimes the journey really is about the destination.

REVIEW - PLEASE STAND BY Very occasionally a film comes your way that you have never heard of but the synopsis sounds interesting so you think to yourself why not. Confession time, I'm a big fan of science fiction including Star Trek so this film certainly got my attention. Before you read any further and without giving away any spoilers this IS NOT a science fiction film but it is a lovely, funny story which is told in a way that makes you interested in Wendy. One to watch if your a science fiction fans or not.Lovely feel good film about understanding and no violence, swearing.Recommended viewing. Rating 10 out of 10
