daviddaphneredding In this his first movie role, George Strait does an outstanding job as one of his fictitious counterparts who is very frustrated with all the panache connected with the performances-i.e., he doesn't like all the smoke and the lights, but just wants to play his guitar and sing. Because of the frustration he just wants "to take a walk", and so he does. As a basic rule, I am not a country music fan, but this movie has some sort of appeal to it. It's a touching story about an unhappy man who really just wants to find true love. He performs well the many songs he sings in this movie. And, Lesley Ann Warren and Kyle Chandler give strong support as people easy to want to kill because of their crooked shenanigans. The seasoned veteran actor Rory Calhoun (and I grew up on his movies) acts well the part of a run-down rancher who's tired of ranching, and Isabel Glasser is a lovely young lady who, though a pistol at times, is adorable. This is a movie I can't see too often, so good to me personally.

Ben Larson I'm not a fan of modern country. I am more of a George Jones, Ray Price, Eddy Arnold kind of guy. I thought I would give this a shot because it sounded like a really good story.Certainly, the song "When Did You Stop Loving Me?" was the type of song I like. The King of Broken Hearts was magnificent, as was I Cross My Heart.George Strait can definitely act, and Isabel Glasser was someone I want to see more of.Sure, it was a little sappy, but the message was clear. Sometimes you have to go back to your roots and find out who you really are.

BigWhiskers I do enjoy George Straits music and love to dance to it. Now as far as a movie starring George Strait that's a different matter.It should have been a direct to DVD or a cable movie of the week not a theatrical released movie.I saw it on cable yrs ago and watched it again last night on CMT. Strait is simply playing himself and nothing else - if your not into him or his music don't bother watching this movie. BTW, I still don't get why he had his son sing the first few verses of heartland during the opening credits , while some may think its cute to hear a 10 y/o sing acapella ,i found it very grating on my nerves to listen to, especially since the 10 y/o was off key and giggling most of the time. Just like Tim Mcgraws kids at the end of Fly Away - whats the point?There are some interesting landscapes of the Ft Worth Tx and surrounding areas where Strait walks on his journeys. Hmm why didn't he rent a car with all his money? Oh well , the story is typical nothing new - famous person(in this movie Straits character is Dusty) gets tired of their life and scene and decides to go out into the real world to see what they may be missing. In his case back to his grandma and his roots. He goes to a country bar and meets a cute cowgirl and spends some time at her ranch - learns to rope and learns to love. Meanwhile his road show is in jeopardy with a stand in lipsynching (aka milli vanilli) - this part of the movie really crosses the believability factor. The actor looks nothing like Strait and even with smoke and mirrors would never have been able to pull it off. Like how would you pull off the ad-libs in between song sets with the audience -the thanks you's etc? and what about the band if you never played with them and knew the beats and changes etc? like one band member says to lulu the manager" if we speed up or slow down he cant keep up with us ".That part of the movie was the most fake and unbelievable - the reason Rob And Fav (Milli Vanilli) got away with it was because the real singers were never known until after the scam not before so their faces were the only ones audiences ever saw and they practiced for years to get the stage shows down pat - buddy had no time to do this and looked so bad and fake. The movie drags some with sappy dialog and corny scenes of Straits goofy smile. It all boils down to whether or not he wants to go back to the bright lights or stay with Harley the cowgirl - she is also another unbelievable character - looks and dresses like a million bucks but is supposedly a struggling ranchers daughter competing in rodeos to save the ranch from being sold. Well long story short , eventually Lulu shows up and tells Harley that Dusty is his husband to which Harley tells Dusty I hate you for being a liar and to get lost. Its up to the audience to surmise that Lulu did it to get Harley out of the picture and get Dusty back - its also implied in the beginning of the movie that they had a thing going when Lulu met Dusty before she was his manager - i have watched this movie several times and still cant find the part where thats implied but i think Lulu mentions something about it.There are plot holes in this movie like if Straits' character is so big a star how come nobody in the small Texas town that he wanders through knows who he is ? I mean in Texas? even in the smallest towns they know who is who in country music. OK he shaves his face and ponytail -still looks like the same guy to me. And one which I really hated was at the end of the movie when Lulu asks to see Harley ,all it shows is them looking at each other -no dialog and then it cuts to the concert with Harley sitting down with her family, one of them asks her about it and she shrugs them off. they again leave it to the audience to surmise what lulu said to harley -someone told me there was supposed to be a scene of lulu telling harley why she said dusty was her husband and coming clean about who he really is and who she is but I've never seen it ,another cutting room floor thing? why did they leave it out?The sappy ending song and him walking down the stage to hug her will appeal to chick flick fans ,all others will be long bored by then. I give it a 5/10 ,the music is great ,the movie is very average. For die hard strait fans only ,others will find it boring.FYI- The famous person running away thing was done much better in Roman Holiday with Audrey Hepburn.

Savanna (MinnieVan) I really enjoyed this movie. It was on TV about a month ago, and my boyfriend who LOVES George Strait wanted to watch it. I was less-than-enthusiastic, but I decided to watch it anyway. I'm glad I did, because I fell in love with this film.It's a very sweet and innocent movie. The plot is simple -- a country music star is tired of the image he has and wants to only perform his music and not put on a "light show." So he leaves the tour and tries to find himself. :) In doing so, he falls in love and the tour goes to Hell. The resolution is great, and the final song is one of my favorites.I recommend this movie to everyone, regardless of whether or not you are a country fan.
