Leofwine_draca ROBOTROPOLIS is a cheesy B-movie spin on the classic sci-fi staple of robots turning murderous, so there are the requisite nods to THE TERMINATOR and WESTWORLD, but actually this is a film which has a style all of its own. Financed by US money but actually made in Singaporea, I found myself really enjoying the premise and set-up, which is a surprise as I normally find such B-movie fare to be pretty dull. The story is set in the near future and sees robots acting as guardians of society - a bit like the ED-209s in ROBOCOP. Yes, they eventually run amok, but before then ROBOTROPOLIS has quite a slow build-up. It's as realistic as it can get given the premise, and I enjoyed the way it didn't devolve into mindless action from the outset as so many do. Plenty of thought has gone into this, and the production values are better than you'd expect. In some ways ROBOTROPOLIS reminded me of the found footage genre; the whole news reporter angle is a little reminiscent of the eco-horror THE BAY. Zoe Naylor (THE REEF) is pretty nice as the sympathetic lead, and I enjoyed watching the corporate shenanigans play out. Yes, the robot CGI is amateurish at best, but nonetheless this is a surprisingly enjoyable little B-flick.
otherunicorn-62-581997 Spoilers? First, even if I told you the entire plot up front, I couldn't spoil it for you. It manages to do that all by itself in its opening scene. The timing on this is all wrong. They just didn't get it to flow where needed. If you are somehow able to stay through the first, very boring, half hour, chances are you'll last to the end, as the pace does pick up a little. The whole production screams "no budget". It appears to have been filmed on location at "anywhere they would let us film free of charge". Seriously, it had the same look and feel as those awful home made commercials that sometimes make it onto commercial TV.Loose ends abound, not that you actually care about them. Computer graphics? Obvious. Plot line? Obvious. Those who will survive and those who will die? Obvious. The "sinister twist" at the end? Well, I have to admit I didn't see it coming, but that was because there was absolutely nothing there to suggest it was... oh, who am I kidding. The end seemed like a classic case of "oh dear, we forgot to have a reason behind all this. Let's throw in a 30 second scene to explain why we had all of those 5 minute scenes where nothing much happened. And those were the good points. Now for what I actually enjoyed about the woeful thing -1) I only paid $2 for it. 2) As pathetic as their whole news reader/news reporting style behind this thing was, it was true to life. In real life I have been interrupted 5 minutes before the climax of a movie by the station cutting to 'breaking news' where 'experts' babble on about what they think might be happening in a zoomed in shot of a deserted street where allegedly a terrorist had done something minutes before. They captured this mindlessness perfectly. 3) Female lead: "Oh, the little girl I hid here a minute ago is missing. Let's go find her in this town filled with homicidal robots." Male lead. "No, she's gone. Forget it. Let's run." They ran. Hooray! For once the realistic path was chosen, instead of the one-in-one-million long-shot that always miraculously succeeds. That was refreshing. 4) It somehow actually held my attention to the end. But then, I do deliberately go looking for woeful science fiction at the pawn shop because it amuses me.
peter-883-37792 Common guys. This is definitely not Oscar material I agree but I have seen far, far worse shows. The CGI on the robots was very good, Zoe Naylor did a perfectly adequate job that bordered on good at times and Peer Metz was enjoyable and believable. Edward Foy was annoying. I couldn't decide if i wanted him to survive or have his head squashed. I agree that the scene at the football field was incredibly bad. In itself it may qualify for one of the worst scenes I have ever seen but that was only one scene. Yes, the fade to dark ending was,at worst, annoying but I did hear the robots power down; I guess because I wasn't frantically making notes on how I was going to slam the movie. I quite enjoyed the show, a bit corny but certainly watchable. If you want really bad try my all time favourite bad movie "Chawz".
Callam_10 "contains spoilers" The acting is the worst i have ever seen, Zoe Naylor is by far the worst, she needs to give up acting all together!!!. She shows no emotion when the guy on the football field gets shot. Also the footballers are terrible actors they just walk away, surely you would go see if he's alive, right? The script is terrible, when the footballer gets shot, Zoe's character stands there and says stuff like "someone has just been shot". I was watching it thinking THANK YOU CAPTAIN OBVIOUS -.-The scenery in this movie is great, i really enjoyed it. The robots are OK, they could have added a bit more animation to them though. The explosion effects are OKThis film is very boring at the beginning but about 35 minutes through it starts to pick up. Still i would not recommend the movie.
