Reviews

Jim Wickham After yawning through the appalling tedium and casual racism of 'Lost in Translation', I'm kicking myself for falling for the same thing again.Nothing happens in this film. NOTHING! Stare at the wall instead, and avoid wasting money and being horribly disappointed.
QTarantino14 İf we need the summarized the movie with one word; That would be the 'underrated'. I know we can't say ''this movie for everybody'' Because Somewhere one of the slow movies. Sometimes or some moments it can be hard to watch. But this doesn't mean we are watching a bad film. On contrary this the perfect way for this subject.I was surprised by the reviews, of course I was waiting bad comments but this too much for my opinion. Specially I liked the scenes Johny Marco and his daughter, because it was so normal, natural. The relationship with his daughter was so important. When his daughter is gone he tried the go back to his previous routine, his life at the famous motel. But he failed. Because he unlocked the door of something. Maybe there's a chance for him. And I want the say Elle Fanning was perfect. After the Lost in Translation this is the best movie of Sofia Coppola. Give it a chance guys.
lefelixbrown There is a lot to admire here. Coppola's direction is minimalist and simple, and her shots are washed with this ambient lightness that provide some intriguing imagery. The problem here is not in Coppola's attention and reflection on the themes at hand, which she does with considerable style and skill, but rather in the theme she has chosen to dominate her picture. The idea of existential ennui has been explored by her before, and in a much more interesting way, with Lost In Translation. The film focuses on jaded protagonist Johnny Marco, who is an interesting character, but one whose life and struggles are alien to most, making him in an unsuitable protagonist. In my opinion, the focus of the film should have been on his daughter, Cleo, who witnesses her father's life - she herself is naive to a lot of what is going on, and thus we relate to her more. For me, it certainly seems that the daughter-father relationship is what is most fascinating here, and Cleo's reactions and feelings about his life. You would think that a theme which seems to be so close to Coppola's own life would be the main focal point, yet it feels almost secondary, as if it is being pushed aside by Coppola's need to focus on this mopey rich guy. Overall, it is worth a watch for the scenes with Cleo, and for Coppola's artistry, but this is a film that is sadly overwhelmed by a story that would be foreign to most.
pjk84 Well, the title isn't exactly true. You see, I did try. I got around halfway through before "giving up", but I still left the film running on the background while I went surfing the net, and glanced it every so often till the end. It's not like I have the shortest attention span, and couldn't stand watching a slow movie. Not at all, but the slowness still has to have a purpose, and the film must lead to somewhere - Somewhere didn't.I also couldn't find any underlying message or meaning to the film whatsoever. It's shot OK, and has some nice scenery, but nothing of particular interest, and nothing that would set it apart from other modern films (except perhaps no CGI, if that should be a merit). In essence, Somewhere is an exercise in boredom. Just because the main character is bored and without purpose, doesn't mean the audience should feel that way too. For someone with a wildly hectic lifestyle, something like this might be a welcome break, but my life is boring enough as it is.Somewhere did not entertain. 2.5/10
