Reviews

Eric Stevenson I remember reading Leonard Maltin's review of both "Street Fighter" movies. He first said that the original from 1994 was the worst movie ever based on a video game. Then he said this one made that one look like "Citizen Kane"! Yeah, I can agree with him. Whereas the original film was extremely stupid with horrible acting, at least they had the nerve to actually make the characters look the same way they do in the games. In this one, they could barely even get a single costume right. Even Vega's mask looked off! You could in fact change the name of every character and the title and absolutely no one would know it was based on "Street Fighter".None of the characters look or act anything like their video game counterparts. Why did they make these drastic changes anyway? Why even make it a "Street Fighter" movie? Why not just make it an original idea? I don't even think people would accuse it of ripping off "Street Fighter" because of how unrelated it is! It would still be horrendous either way. Even the plot is completely stupid. It features M. Bison being the father of Rose and he actually created her so he could sacrifice his good nature directly into her to become evil. We even see a flashback where he literally performs a C-section on her mother. He still has a soft spot for her. Why? He's pure evil now! Most of the hair colors weren't even right! I would expect a "Street Fighter" movie to have the main character Ryu in it, but they couldn't even do that! They didn't even have the secondary character, Ken in it! Ryu is in fact mentioned at the VERY end of the film when discussing an actual "Street Fighter" tournament. Chun-Li says she isn't interested so the film doesn't even technically set up a sequel! Granted, it's wonderful that it didn't, but still very misleading. I admit to not being that familiar with the newer "Street Fighter" characters.Of course, I didn't have to be to even know that they were represented horribly. Everyone in this movie is stupid, even the extras! There's one scene where someone's shot and a crowd responds by throwing fruit at the shooter. Yeah, I think that'll stop guns. Most of these characters serve no purpose with no distinct personalities. You could literally replace them with anyone else and no one would notice the difference. In the end, M. Bison is defeated by having bags fall on him. Wow, it's a "Home Alone" prank that does him in. This is idiotic in every sense, but I guess it might be because it's worse than the already awful 1994 movie. Not for fans, critics, moviegoers or ANYONE. Zero stars
SnoopyStyle Chun-Li (Kristin Kreuk) witnesses her father being kidnapped by crime lord Bison (Neal McDonough). Years later, she would go into the slums of Bangkok to search for him, and learn to fight from Gen (Robin Shou). Meanwhile Bison and his henchman Balrog (Michael Clarke Duncan) have used kidnapping and intimidation to steal the slums of Bangkok. Police detectives Sunee (Moon Bloodgood) and Charlie Nash (Chris Klein) are trying to bring down Bison. There is good fighting action and some real Bangkok location shoots. It is putting a third or fourth important character from the video game as the lead. Granted she is one of the first female video game characters. But there is always a sense that this is a secondary movie. Kristin Kreuk is a TV actress and she looks like it in this movie. Neal McDonough brings his normal acting prowess. The story is fairly straight forward. But the production value is poor considering the big budget. It feels like a well funded B-movie.
Tkosan It was miracle that the European boss was Finnish (Sami Vayrynen). So we got to hear few (two lines) of Finnish.Every other thing falls flat. Chun-Li didn't look like Chun-Li. Gen didn't look like Gen. Bison(Vega) didn't look like Bison(Vega). Vega(Balrog) didn't look like Vega(Balrog). Well Balrog(Bison) so what look like Balrog(Bison), but with others wasn't enough. So casting was off very much. And ending was disappointing. It left too much open. And same time it reveal too much.So we are left wait sequel that by my option is going to suck more.
rls0812 Here we have yet another movie that uses the Street Fighter name, yet has no idea who the individual characters are. Every one, with the exception of Barlog and Vega, were completely out of their " Street Fighter " character .This movie would have done much better if they dropped the Street Fighter name, and come up with something original. On it's own, it's an alright martial arts / revenge flick / action genre, nothing spectacular, but still an average B action movie ( better than most of Steven Seagal's movies ). The good points: Camera work was pretty good. Fight choreography was OK. Set design was good. The not so good points: The actors were trying, but their deliveries were awkward at times. There are a few plot holes that are never explained. The music at the club scene - WHY did they choose something that BAD? Decisions made by Chun-Li, no real life human would ever do. A lot of padding was used that slows the movie down to a snails pace. Overuse of wire " acrobatics " during combat ( along with pseudo Matrix sound effects thrown in ).If your in the mood for a generic action movie, and have nothing better to watch, this movie would be perfect for you.
