Aaron1375 Me and my fiance saw this listed on Vudu and the summary of the film made it sound interesting and the two stars made the film sound promising. Unfortunately, despite the stars and despite the promising premise, this film failed to really work for me. It as interesting enough to keep me watching as I was curious to see how the film would pull off the reveal (because you just know this one was going to have a reveal), but the climax failed miserably making me fee like I had wasted precious time watching this film rather than doing something a bit more productive. The story has an astronaut played by Johnny Depp going on a mission where something goes wrong. Not sure what exactly, as they kept saying an explosion and that Spencer (Depp) and another astronaut were out of contact and adrift for two minutes. Well, they return home and get welcomed back as heroes, but something seems wrong with the other astronaut and he soon passes away. His wife would later commit suicide. Charlize Theron plays Jillian who is married to Spencer and the film revolves around her trying to discover what exactly did happen in those two minutes that the two astronauts were left stranded in space. She begins to feel her husband is acting differently and soon she finds out she is pregnant with twins. The film is a bit of a combination of Rosemary's Baby and Invasion of the Body Snatchers, but it really did not work. The climax just felt stupid as Jillian in the end may as well just went with the flow and stayed married to her alien husband considering what occurs at the end. Seriously, what did she think would happen? She should have just offed herself, because even if Spencer had died and the alien not get into her she still would have given birth to alien offspring! So, not a really good movie even though it did feature two excellent actors in the lead roles. The storytelling did not work here and neither did the plot which did have promise, but was foolishly squandered trying to be different while obviously copying a copious amount of films. I almost wish the ending to this one featured us learning that Jillian was crazy as that would have actually been a bit more interesting in my mind.
Prismark10 The Astronaut's Wife is a poor reworking of Rosemary's Baby with a modern twist. Just to ram it home, Nick Cassavetes is in this whose dad appeared in Rosemary's Baby. Two astronauts are repairing a satellite. There is an explosion and a two minute radio blackout where contact is lost with NASA. The two astronauts return home to their wives but they seem different. One of them dies and his wife later commits suicide.Jillian (Charlize Theron) a teacher slowly realises that something is not quite right with her husband Spencer (Johnny Depp.) I think it is the way he suddenly materialises out of nowhere. Jillian falls pregnant with twins and an ex NASA employee warns her that something happened to the two astronauts in space. He also tells her that the other astronaut's wife was also pregnant with twins.Rand Ravich does an abysmal job as writer and director. The film is too derivative. Theron is too bland, Depp is just too sinister like John Cassavetes was in Rosemary's Baby.
cadburypg This movie shouldn't have been made. I wonder if the writer and the director had any insight into what they were dealing with. Seems like they had an idea of a space and alien thriller which they made into a movie before it took any concrete shape. What started on a promising note becomes completely lost and shallow. Johnny Depp is a complete miscast as an astronaut. His expressions are too casual for an astronaut and he seems like he has no business being in a sci-fi movie. Even the actor cast as his fellow astronaut looks more like a mercenary. Depp did manage to look a bit creepy when the mystery is out. Theron fares better and is more convincing as a 2nd grade teacher and the chemistry between herself and Depp is pretty good. The plot is wanting in substance and lacks the impact of a haunting and creepy thriller about alien invasion. It fails to make the point of how chilling an alien invasion could be or how easily progress of science could be the doom of mankind. Hell, it even fails to cut a mark about how suddenly a young happily married couple's life is devastated. It was nothing more than a waste of time watching this movie.
Robert J. Maxwell There's a little something for everyone in this tale of an astronaut, Johnny Depp, who has a blackout in space, comes home slightly different, and impregnates his wife, Charline Theron, and gives her two twins made of plasma or something. The general idea -- a brief unconscious period in space -- was done at least twice in the original "Twilight Zone" series, and both were an improvement over this ill-constructed and derivative junk, despite the lavish budget and rather good performances by the principals.Let's see. "The Astronaut's Wife" is almost a remake of "Rosemary's Baby". It's not nearly as well done because it includes some bits of business that are nothing but hoary clichés. Not they don't work. It's always shocking when a woman is alone, shivering with fright, in a dark room, and a hand reaches in from off screen and touches her shoulder, accompanied by a sting on the sound track. Clichés are usually effective. That's why they've become clichés.Turning from "Rosemary's Baby", with the alien things growing inside her, we can see the heavy hand of "The Omen." If you remember the crazy priest who tried to warn Gregory Peck about the plot and was pinned to the earth for his troubles, we have an extremely nervous and deranged black guy who plain disappears while trying to get his warning across. The ending -- in which Therone finally does her fake husband in, and he dissolves amid shrieks and a loud spasm of electronic noise -- has the electronic organisms, if that's the word, zipping into Theron herself, through her blue eyes. That's from "The Exorcist." Naturally, following the model of its forebears, the movie leaves open the door to a sequel, which I pray will never be committed to celluloid.I sat all the way through it just to make sure I'd gotten the ending right. This was written and directed by Rand Ravich. What writer Ravich had not already turned into a commercially oriented horror mess, director Ravich manages. He must have been weaned on television commercials because suddenly, and without purpose, we get enormous close ups of eyeballs and lips, especially Theron's lips. Don't get me wrong. Her lips are, well, inviting and her philtrum is exquisite. But it's all very much like a commercial for a brokerage house.See it if you must.
