Julian R. White With as incredibly rare as this film is, I decided to drop a whole $20 on the recently released bluray version, simply because I just wanted a chance to see it. Let me start off by saying the stop motion and notorious "tongue flailing dinosaur" in this film was so comically bad. Now on to the main problem I have... The movie hardly focuses on the beast at all. In fact, the first 75% of the movie doesn't even MENTION that there was ever even legends of a beast surrounding the mountain. The only thing we hear about it is told to us by the narrator immediately after the opening credits. That being said, it's pretty weird that when the monster finally does make its appearance, it seems almost as if it was expected by the townspeople. They act as if an enormous blue tongue flailing monster dinosaur is a normal sight in their lives, and no one even questions what the animal even is. The part that made me confused though was the ending. The monster is dead, hooray, but the distraught little boy never finds his father whom he so desperately wants to find (though as the viewer, we know he has been killed). The boy never again asks about his father, nor does his reaction really bring any..closure I suppose you could say. I loved the monster, I loved its trademark design, but I didn't really like the plot, and its seemingly entirely unrelated love-triangle.
gavin6942 An American cowboy living in Mexico (Guy Madison) discovers his cattle is being eaten by a giant prehistoric dinosaur. What is most strange about this film is that the dinosaur aspect -- which is played up with the poster, title and such -- really is not all that important. The bulk of the film is not about missing cattle but Jimmy's relationship with a woman who is engaged to another man.The story could be good enough just like that -- a love triangle, with some multicultural stress thrown in. Jimmy is apparently the only American in the film, making him something of a stranger -- he is encroaching on Mexican soil and trying to "steal" a Mexican woman. Much could be said about American opinion of Mexican immigration and how it is reversed here, but I will not go there. The film ultimately comes up mediocre because it does not blend its fantasy and western aspects as smoothly as it could. Fantasy fans will be bored for much of the film. Western fans may enjoy it a bit more, seeing as it never strays from the genre until much later on.
GL84 When their cattle herds start disappearing, rival ranches declare the other responsible and begin feuding with each other, unaware the true culprit is a reawakened dinosaur that lives in a cursed swamp nearby and forces them to work together to ward it off. This was a troubling affair as it did have some enjoyable moments spread throughout but really gets caught up in it's own problems. One of the major ones here is the Western influence on the storyline taking such center-stage that it doesn't allow the horror to sift through, making it into a monster movie out of nowhere with no real explanation for anything and really downplaying it overall as well. While the two sides warring over the cattle herds as well as the woman make for some fine moments at times, especially once the jealousy kicks in and they start actively fighting each other, the fact that this constitutes the majority of the film's opening hour makes it quite obvious there's no real intent to wage on anything else in here and renders the dinosaur's first appearance in the hour's closing minuets. As well, the shoddy nature of the stop-motion animation used to bring it to life is ridiculously cheap and cheesy and doesn't for a second convince otherwise of it's realism when the genre really should've done better by that time, and the laughable inclusion of many factual and physiological errors about the creature is another fun point of ridicule. While it does have some rather fun moments once the dinosaur's actually out and about which makes for a whirlwind finale, it's a little too late to save this one.Today's Rating-PG: Violence and children-in-jeopardy.
BaronBl00d I like dinosaur movies. I like The Valley of Gwangi. This is barely either. Sure it has a dinosaur. Sure it has cowboys. Sure it takes place in that land of prehistoric adventure(Mexico)(?) But let us not get too carried away here. First of all - for much of the film - absolutely nothing happens except for a rather lame fight between Guy Madison as an American rancher versus the wealthy Mexican rancher who loves pretty(and perky) Patricia Medina. I mean nothing happens. We do not even get a real hint of the dinosaur until forty-five minutes into the film when Pancho gets a formal dinner invitation. Do we see the dinosaur then? Oh no. It does not appear for another ten minutes and its screen time is definitely limited. The dinosaur is done with that lost art - stop motion animation. It is done okay for its time. in fact the denouement of the film was pretty cool with the quicksand and guy Madison on a rope. I also liked the scene with the dinosaur skidding down a cliff and trying to get Panchito and Medina in a cabin. If more had been done with this, the film would have been markedly improved. Notwithstanding all of that, the film was fairly entertaining despite its legion of flaws. The acting is over-the-top from Madison giving his best good-guy cowboy impression(whilst secretly lusting after another man's woman" to Pascaul Garcia Pena doing one of the drunkest buffoonish characters on screen. Medina is over-the-top too - but boy what a top to see! Her bulletted blouse nearly explodes! The Beast of Hollow Mountain is interesting for nothing else than seeing some early stop motion animation techniques used. the film could have used the dreadful "let's dress up a lizard" technique but chose not to. I see many comparing this to Harryhausen's Gwangi - truly. I see little similarities. That is a very good film. This one, is at best, okay.
