ivo-cobra8 The Burning (1981) is an instant classic slasher horror flick, puts most of horror movies today to shame. This movie come out the same year as did Friday the 13th Part 2 my favorite horror film. They are so many horror films in 1981 I haven't hear, see or they are forgotten. This movie however surprised me. "It ripped off Friday the 13th" no it didn't! This movie was different, it was a revenge film but it was different than Friday the 13th. It is an original story not a copycat of other slasher films. Honestly I think this movie is much way better horror movie than Friday the 13th Part 2. This movie has a different story, it is not that bad and it is a good slasher movie and it just become my favorite horror film. The story follows campers from summer camp goes with canoe trip to Devil's Creek once there they become targets, from a former summer camp caretaker, horribly burned from a prank gone wrong, with a pair of hedge clippers to take revenge on the campers. Once there they are trapped while assailant is stalking them and kills them one by one. I enjoy this film it is not a bad slasher horror film it is instant classic and really puts most of horror films to shame. It has a lot of nudity with girls been naked and sexy. This days I don't see any naked girls in any slasher horror films today. They don't make horror movies like this one in the woods today. Back in the 80's was more work than today. Tom Savini from Dawn of the Dead makes special effect for more gory blood and they work. Just like he did special effects for Friday the 13th, Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter and Dawn of the Dead he makes effects for this movie and the gory kills really works. There is a lot of scares and twists in here that keeps getting you interested and intense. It doesn't allowed you to stop watching it. Friday the 13th part 2, My Bloody Valentine, The Burning, The Howling and American Werewolf in London are really in my top five favorite films from 1981 in horror genre. Why can't we get movies like this?Directed and original story by Tony Maylam who directed the film really good. I miss movies like this today and I think it is a really good movie. Brian Matthews, Brian Backer, Carrick Glenn and Carolyn Houlihan were believable at acting and they were really good. 8/10 this movie is an instant classic in the horror genre from the 80's for me.
Wizard-8 Here's an original setting for a slasher film: A summer camp! Well, actually "The Burning" was one of the first slasher movies to be set at a summer camp, so I don't think it's fair to accuse its setting as not being original. And unlike many other slashers of the era, this one looks somewhat more polished and expensive. But all the same, I was disappointed with the final results. One complaint that I read from another IMDb user stating that the movie has far more talk than horror material is indeed true. For example, after the first killing (in the first ten minutes of the movie), you have to wait almost forty more minutes before the next killing. And it's not like the youth characters doing all this talking in the movie are sympathetic or likable, though I got a kick out of one character looking like Pauly Shore. As for the horror elements, they too are disappointing for the most part. Tom Savini's gore and makeup effects run hot and cold, and the scenes with the killer doing his thing are for the most part not particularly well staged, especially the disappointing final confrontation. (Though I admit the raft scene has some punch.) Maybe die hard slasher fans will enjoy this - it's definitely better than a lot of other slashers of this period. But if you're not a slasher fan, I'd suggest you look for something else to watch.
darksyde-63508 Coming along in the first wave of slasher movies hot after the success of "Friday the 13th", comes another tale of stupid teenagers doing stupid things and having sex at a summer camp right before getting slaughtered in various painful looking ways. As usual with most slasher movies, the acting is all over the place. Some of the actors are decent enough, while some are just horrible and you wonder how they even got the role in the first place. And as usual with most slashers in the first wave and after, there are boobs a plenty to be viewed. And, also as usual, most.of the "teenagers" look like their in their mid 20's. This movie also employs the killers "POV" shot, which has become synominous with the slasher genre , before and long after this film. Compared to other films in this genre, The Burning is fairly slow moving, with none of the killings, except for one small one in the beginning, taking place until about 40 minutes into the movie, instead deciding to focus on the characters, who for the most part are all so unlikeable you'll be wishing they'd get knocked off sooner. Even once the killings begin, their fairly restrained and pretty fake looking. And once they actually begin there's long periods in between until another takes place. The only upside to this movie is the infamous "raft scene" where a raft full of five people get brutally slaughtered in about 30 seconds. Even then, the gore effects aren't that great, which is depressing considering that they were done by the great Tom Savini. This movie has been considered to be one of the greats of the slasher genre, up there with "Halloween" and "Friday the 13th". Frankly, I disagree, as I found it boring, slow moving, and just not that great in general.
Uriah43 This movie begins at a place in upstate New York called "Camp Blackfoot" where a few teenagers are about to play a prank on the camp caretaker who goes by the name of "Cropsy" (Lou David). Unfortunately, something goes dreadfully wrong and Cropsy is engulfed in flames and barely manages to make it to a nearby lake in time to save himself. He then spends years in a hospital and eventually comes out horribly disfigured and consumed with hate. To that end, his first act upon being released is to kill a prostitute who expresses shock at his appearance. He then travels to a place called "Camp Stonewater" which is near the place where he was set on fire five years earlier. As it so happens, Camp Stonewater has a number of young teenagers in attendance with one of the camp counselors named "Todd" (Brian Matthews) being present during the prank on Cropsy years earlier. Whether Cropsy is aware of this or not is unknown but regardless of that fact he is determined to kill as many people as he can one way or another. Now as far as this movie is concerned I must admit that it has quite a few similarities to "Friday the 13th" and as such suffers to a certain degree by comparison. One thing in particular I didn't care for was the age of some of the victims who were a bit too young in my opinion. I mean, it's okay to kill off the camp counselors because that's what they are there for. But not teenage kids. Hmmm. On the other hand, I must also admit that some of them were quite annoying so perhaps it wasn't necessarily that bad after all. In any case, this movie had its moments here and there and the presence of some attractive young ladies like former Miss Ohio beauty queen Carolyn Houlihan (as "Karen"), Carrick Glenn ("Sally") and Leah Ayres ("Michelle") certainly didn't hurt either. All things considered then I suppose this wasn't a bad "80's slasher film" overall and I have rated it accordingly. Average.
