For the most part, "The Last American Virgin" is your run-of-the-mill teen sex comedy (a genre for which I've apparently lost taste over the years), albeit with a pretty remarkable soundtrack. There were a couple of comedic bits that were amusing, certainly enough to keep me hooked in. But at a certain point (somewhat late in the game) the movie takes a real turn, and one of these three horndogs becomes the film's romantic, doomed to a sex life full of frustration and misery. Eventually, the songs become emotional music cues as the movie adopts a mature tone (possibly sexist, but deeply cynical). And that ending (I won't give it away, but I could sense it coming with dread) is what makes this film resonate. And it's a jaw-dropper.7/10

What starts out as a teen gross-out comedy, a spiritual prequel of sorts to the American Pie franchise, evolves into an unexpectedly tender, timeless and lifelike story of coming of age, men and women, desire and betrayal. Good boy falls for the girl; girl picks the bad boy; good boy gets hurt - a classic Turgenev plot. The acting is top-notch. In particular, Lawrence Monoson as Gary gives an incredibly touching and nuanced performance, masterfully inhabiting that awkward 'boy to man' space. Yet the somber moments unfold side by side with laugh- out-loud, lusty comedy - not an easy balance to achieve. This film will stay with you, and not just as a trip down the memory lane for those of us who were fortune enough to go through our teenage years under the flashing neon lights of the 1980s.

I was 15 years old when cable TV came out and one late night I was in my parent's basement and this movie came on. Being a teen I was happy of course to see the comedy hi-jinx along with the nudity (I was 15 OK?!)Halfway through the movie though, everything changed. It got REAL!Without spoiling the movie the ending was one that has stayed with me all these years! I had not really thought about the movie but I stumbled upon a clip on Youtube and the memories (and emotions) all came flooding back! I had to buy and watch it again!I actually fast-forwarded to about the halfway mark of the movie and was just as enthralled with it as I was as a teen. This has to be one of the best teen flicks ever made for it's stark realism! If parents can get past the 1st half of the movie with the nudity, I think it could be an educational opportunity for their teenagers.

Who would have guessed that a teenage sex comedy could be so deep? In today's movie environment, where the good guys always win in the end, this movie wouldn't make it out of the cutting room . As other reviewers have stated the first hour of the movie starts out as your typical teenage sex comedy of the 1980's. About an hour into the movie it's like someone flipped a switch. It was like, now I got you, here is a lesson in real life kids.I remember seeing this movie for the first time, and I was totally floored by the ending. The real lesson of this movie is that Love is a mysterious thing. You can't force love on the person of your dreams, sexual attraction is always a mystery. Several people have commented that you should watch this movie as a teenager or with your teenage kids. I don't know if I agree with that. How do you handle the discussion with your kid if they ask "Was Mommy/Daddy the person of your dreams?" Many times the answer would be .....I remember when I saw this movie I was furious at the girl. But in hindsight, she didn't ask for the boys help with her problem. He offered it to her, but so what? She is just trying to find happiness. Just because she's attracted to a jerk doesn't invalidate her feelings. Ultimately one of the messages of this movie is that you have to find your own way in life, and just hope that the stumbles don't break your heart too much.I'm amazed that this movie got made in 1982. I suspect that the director pitched it as a teen sex comedy, and the studio said, sure go ahead and make it. Did he then slip the second half in under the studio's nose? If you want to see a brutally honest movie about the teenage human condition, without the sappy clichéd endings that most modern movies have today, rent this relatively unknown gem. Just expect to be a little uncomfortable two hours later.
