Alison At the 2015 edition of Montreal's FantAsia Festival, my husband and I were privileged to see "Remake, Remix, Ripoff: About Copy Culture and Turkish Pop Cinema," a documentary chronicling the film industry in Turkey from the 1950s to the 1980s. Having no copyright laws, the filmmakers there tended to just chop up scenes from Western big- budget films and insert them into "remakes" of those blockbusters. Well, "The Man Who Saved the World" was one of the best of these, and boy is it a hoot! Murat (Cuneyt Arkin) and Ali (Aytekin Akkaya) are space fighters a la "Star Wars" (and space fights from the original 1977 film are inserted frequently here) who find themselves stranded on a strange planet with red-suited kinda Wookies, a Robbie the Robot ripoff, some things that look like Storm Troopers and a bunch of skeletons on horseback. Oh yeah, and a sad batch of the remaining humans in the Universe. Also a 1,000 year old evil Wizard who plans to destroy the Earth, one way or another! Lots of zombies, ninjas, chop-socky kung- fu moves, acrobatic jumps and rolls, power fists and sultry ladies; who could ask for anything more? Tremendous fun!
SemenDemonReviews This movie made my butthole tense at every moment, I can't believe they made a prequel to the amazing Turks In Space. I'll always love Kartal Tibet, his directing is unbeatable due to his insane amount of classic Turkish delights. The fact star wars had to steal scenes from this movie is beyond me, like you can't beat the originality of Turkish movies, so why steal scenes? For a 1982 movie, this is beyond the requirements for modern day movies. If I were to refer this to a friend, I'd have to come and watch it with them. Even the trailer had me in tears from the pure emotion that each actor had, i was clenching my Turkish toiletries anytime Murat got his big lightsaber out.
superguapo2000 "Dünyayi kurtaran adam" (The Man Who Saved the Earth) is the story of "strongest and greatest two Turkish warriors" who save planet Earth from the forces of Evil. It takes place during the so-called Galaxy Era, an era when the Earth (already shattered to pieces) is on its way to total destruction, barely held together by a protective shield made out of powdered human brains. The movie is inspired by the cult movie "Star Wars", made by George Lucas a few years before its Turkish counterpart was released. The American version was an ambitious effort: Lucas sought to show not only that Good can triumph over Evil, even in Outer Space, but also that it's possible to sell action figures of characters that receive less than ten seconds of screen time, and in doing so, become one of the richest people on Earth. "Dünyayi kurtaran adam" builds upon these ideas, yet does not forget to acknowledge Lucas' influence. If you look closely, you might notice that director Çetin Inanç has cleverly interwoven random footage from the original, yet given it a new context (and aspect ratio) that provides a unique and compelling insight into the Human Condition. It should not go without saying that Dünyayi Kurtaran Adam was made in a time when government restrictions in Turkey prohibited the viewing of films from abroad. In that light, one can only imagine the joy that the Turkish people must have felt when blessed by this release, and the gratitude they must have felt toward their otherwise oppressive government.
brujahonly Here are the quotes: - We are too far away from the Earth! The indicators aren't working! - Alpha, beta and ANKARA! (I swear, the robot with the funny light bulb says that!) - Although the aliens had many powers, they did not have brains. - They resisted the torture. Take them to the arena and humiliate them! - There is no time here. For example, I am a thousand years old. - Come on and whistle the way that no woman can resist. - Beam them! BEAM THEM!!! (Which means "shoot them with your futuristic laser pistols") - DESTROY THE EARTH! (Right after...) EARTH, YOU WILL BE MINE! - 13th tribe is the tribe of our ancestors... Then what part of the earth is this? Please I beg of you, do not judge Turkish cinema with this one.
