Reviews

CJFouraki The mermaid is just as crazy, and funny and as dramatic as Chow's other popular works, Kung Fu Hustle and Shaolin Soccer, with an environmental message to boot. The acting is good and everyone delivers on the comedy and drama when they have to, and they were great together on screen. The story is straightforward and fun, with a good mix of drama, romance, comedy and action in it, a classic Chow film. The visuals are very pretty and the cinematography is really good. The special effects are the same as in his other films - you can tell they're fake but for some reason, they just fit in well with everything else. The sound effects and design are good, and the soundtrack/score is classic, weird, heroic and dramatic Chow styled music. There is a major tonal shift in the last 20 minutes of the film where things become a lot darker, but it still has that Stephen Chow drama and heart to it, so it doesn't feel off-putting. Overall, if you've watched Stephen Chow movies before and have loved them like I have, then there's really no reason to miss this one either. It's good fun, has heart and emotion, with a cheesy yet truthful message about saving the environment, wrapped up in this quirky fantasy tale. 7/10 good fun.
zommoland Probably this is not a masterpiece of Stephen Chow's but I liked this plot. It is a simple movie . But genius Stephen Chow proved his talent by making it an excellent . Of course it was not as funny as Shaolin Soccer but it holds an excellent message which touched my heart . Only Chow can do send message through comedy . This movie made me laugh , made me sad and made me amazed . The legend Stephen Chow narrated the whole story in his own way and I admired it . If it was not Stephen Chow the whole movie would feel simply boring . But Chow showed his talent . Hat's off Chow. You are the best .
Lord Of Crows Firstly, why do all Chinese movie romances have the guy yelling angrily, "I love you!" like it's a bad thing? They make me think that Chinese culture promotes the man being stoic and then loses his mind every once in a while while the girl is usually non-serious and goofy. I've never found the chemistry between Chinese leads to indicate a simmering romantic heat and I can't help but conclude that Chinese are a bit prudish. They try to make romance too innocent and childish and when they have a kissing scene it seemed awkward. Not hot.In addition to a lame romance, Stephen Chow tries to use his slap stick physical comedy but most gags were not even remotely funny. Major physical elements didn't work at all. e.g., the rich dude trying to explain to the two cops his encounter with the mermaids. Also, the tentacled dude getting his tentacles cooked at the chef's stand didn't work either. The girl playing the mermaid love interest had a few chuckle worthy parts where she was singing. What is up with all the insults she has to deal with from everyone though? She just laughs and agrees? Weird.I liked Kung Fu Hustle a lot but this was not even close to that film which to me is like the Chinese Monty Python and the Holy Grail. I give "The Mermaid" 5/10... +1 for the environmental message... 6/10.
bandi naga rakesh Director Stephen Chow needs no introduction. He has captured our imagination with his style of comedy and action movies like Kung Fu Hustle and Shaolin Soccer. Coming to this movie, the director tries to show us how we humans have fraught ourselves with the dogma that we own all the things created by the GOD. We have wrung the life out of everything only to hoard ourselves with riches and wealth and have obstinately vilified the rights of other beings to live on Earth. The titular character Mermaid seeks revenge to save her species from the cusps of extinction. She goes out on a mission to establish this by killing the owner of a reality tycoon who himself is lost in wretches of wealth and seeks to convert an island into a theme park. The movie is defined by the line " what is the use of all the wealth when there is not a drop to drink and fresh air to breathe". It shows how the tycoon changes his heart and saves the lives of Mermaids. Our heart goes out for the Mermaids when they are mercilessly hunted down and we then come to realize that is what we do in our daily lives- kill other species for our greed and meaningless satisfaction. But at the end of the day all we need is a soul which will love us with all our pitfalls and share with us this ugly world.A must watch for all those who love a cocktail of love, action, fantasy and morals.
