rhi_j Seriously - I couldn't even stomach watching the whole thing. The performances are static and the dialogue is jarring. The plot is three steps over the line of predictability (and not in a good way like some rom coms done well) I was sitting cringing at the start of every scene as you saw a constant regurgitation of anti-climatic cliché scenarios and lines. I made it to just over 40 minutes without simultaneously stabbing myself in the eardrum and eye which I think is an achievement! In conclusion I would just like to say that Julia Styles hit her mark in 10 Things I Hate About You (a predictable rom com that defined my teenage years)and should have given up acting at that point.
SnoopyStyle Wisconsin university student Paige Morgan (Julia Stiles) has her life planned out. She's the last of her friends to get married. It's all about her studies and her need to get into med school at Johns Hopkins. Eddie (Luke Mably) is the spoiled pampered heir to the royal throne of Denmark. He lives a sheltered life. After seeing a "The Girls of Wisconsin" commercial on TV, he decides to go to university in Wisconsin incognito. His parents are exasperated. He is accompanied by man servant Soren. He is quickly taken with Paige who's working as a bartender. She finds him annoying but he turns up at her class and becomes her permanent lab partner. She doesn't know his position. Of course she eventually falls for him. Then they're ambushed by a couple of paparazzi. Eddie is hopelessly ridiculous and stupid. I guess he is the male version of the adorable clueless princess. It doesn't work at all. It makes him an utterly annoying douche. Julia Stiles is lovely and stops this from being completely unlikeable. Luke Mably doesn't come off at all well. Lucky for him, Julia is good enough to sell this love story by herself. As Eddie's personality improves, the romance does improve. If he started with a nice personality, this would such a better movie and the chemistry would be so much better.
neenahhh This movie is cute, fun and very enjoyable! It's nothing special, though. Just another movie where girl falls in love with boy even if she's not supposed to and yada yada yada. But other than the clichéd storyline, this film is still great. I don't understand why people are saying that they had to "force" themselves to watch this whole movie! While watching this film, I felt like I was watching two separate movies. (SPOILER:) First movie- The rich, spoiled prince from Denmark goes off to Wisconsin to have a good time and unexpectedly falls in love with this stubborn and determined girl. The second movie- The prince goes back to Denmark to fulfill his role as part of the royal family and the girl follows him. (/SPOILER) Granted, both 'movies' were connected, but I felt like both parts lacked development. It could have been improved on. Especially the second part of the movie. The second half of the film just seemed too rushed. It brought down my rating for this movie.I liked Julia Stiles' character here. A smart, hardworking, strong-personality woman who was very fixated on her dream to become a doctor and travel the world to help others. Even when Eddie came into her life, she was still focused on her goals. (SPOILER:) It's just sad that she kind of forgot them as she and Eddie began getting closer. It was like she dropped all her morals and goals just so she could be with some guy. Which I don't condone. (/SPOILER) Overall, an enjoyable film. It's easy and fun. The characters themselves are fun to watch and have interesting stories. This isn't the best romance movie, but I think it's still somewhere up there.Viewed on: April 14, 2011
Rainbow-no5 I enjoyed this movie, but I think it has a lot to do with the fact that I'm a Dane myself. I found myself smiling on a few occasions, which involved Danish actors or mentions of other Danish things. But there's many things that's not correct, obviously. Danish princes are practically always called Christian or Frederik, we currently don't have a king but a queen, we speak Danish and our newspapers are also in Danish, and monarchs are not allowed to be involved in politics. I'm sure there is more, but I can't remember. But it's a cute story, predictable, but it's a romantic comedy, and those are predictable.See it, enjoy it, but don't take it too literally.
