One of Don Bluthe's best. I loved it from beginning to end. Sadly some of the voice actors are no longer with us, doesn't mean that their legacy, part of it, went to voice amazing characters like Mrs. Brisby or Jermey or even Mr. Ages. Mrs. Brisby's husband is already dead, her son Timmy is very sick and she goes on a quest to find the great owl. I loved this movie. 100% amazing!

The directorial debut of the legendary Don Bluth, and still considered by many, including yours truly, to be his crowning achievement. Based on a book Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH by Robert C. O'Brien, it tells the tale of Mrs. Jonathan Brisby, whose son Timothy has fallen ill and cannot be removed from his bed under any circumstances. Unfortunately the Moving Day is near as the farmer is about to start plowing the fields, upon one of which the Brisby house is situated. Thus Mrs. Brisby has to go to the rats living under the rosebush for help. For they've evolved above normal rats through experiments done to them by humans.What makes this such a great film is how seriously the story is taken. Don Bluth clearly believes in the story with all his heart and, this being quite an independent project, is not afraid of telling it exactly how he wants to tell it. It's a dark movie by today's standards, with heavy themes questioning the duality of nature versus science, the responsibility of sentience, the burdens of leadership and what it really means to be brave, to risk everything for a goal you believe in with all your heart. And nowhere is this more apparent than in our heroine. Mrs. Brisby is just a common mouse. She has no special skills, no training, no great feats to her name. The large world, filled with predators and threats beyond her understanding, scares her, but she faces it. Because she must. And that makes her a hero above all else.It's also stunningly gorgeous film. Don Bluth's signature style is in full display here and each scene is filled with Gothic beauty, dark shadows and lurking details. The atmosphere is straight from the dark ages, enhancing the horror, and making the light shine all the brighter. It's also auditorially pleasing, with great voice actors and a score that bears repeating time and time again.The Secret of NIMH is a jewel among animated films. A film children can watch and feel the shivers, but which only adults can truly appreciate for its themes.

I'm not going to bother with what CULT as an acronym means. As some background, this film was pitched shortly after Don Bluth left Disney in 1979 over production values in The Fox and The Hound. As a first film for an animation studio, the Disney-esque art style and story really blew me away when I saw it on TV. The animation has some Disney mojo mixed in with subtle originality, and quite a few times I went "Whoa" at how well done the effects were, such as colored light flashes. The characters, while being worth our eyes, are actually not highly memorable, and the cast to a modern person would seem incredibly obscure (despite how their performances are amazing). The story presents a lot of darkness and mystery, with anxiety or intrigue in an absolute majority of the frames. 15 years after having left our childhood memories with Tom and Jerry, Metro-Goldwyn- Mayer makes the wise decision to distribute this film (but oh God no they made a sequel), and not long after it lost popularity, CULT grew. See it should you consider it, because for the most part, it deserves CULT.

Nicodemus mourns the lost the Jonathan in a difficult task against NIMH (later revealed to be National Institute of Mental Health). Jonathan's widow Mrs. Brisby goes to Mr. Ages for help. Her youngest Timothy is ill and can't get up for 3 weeks. However moving day is coming. On the way back home, he runs into the bumbling Crow Jeremy (Dom DeLuise) which attracts the farmer's cat Dragon. The farmer is plowing the field and Mrs. Brisby needs help. Auntie Shrew directs her to the Great Owl who in turn sends her to find Nicodemus.This has the style of the old Disney hand drawn animation. The characters are truly compelling. Mrs. Brisby is a great heroine better than many of the Disney princesses. Dom DeLuise is terrific comic relief. The movie represents the marriage of old style animation, compelling characters and a wonderful story.
