Reviews

Scott Volentine If you've ever seen the movie Adaptation with Nicholas Cage, then this is exactly the movie that Charlie Kaufman's twin brother would have made. Just a pathetic collection of clichés littered across a bland, hard to see setting. Most of the movie only consists of Laura looking at and poking around at various objects scattered through the house. When she is being chased by this mysterious figure that doesn't concern her, she would rather look at old Polaroid cameras or pictures hanging on the wall or little trinkets laying on tables. So the supposedly "tense" situation is nullified by the nonchalant air that Laura just strolls around the house with. And the whole thing is just clichés building on other clichés. "Stay here I'll go say hello to whoever is upstairs." "Let's split up," blah blah blah. And then this character that was living upstairs just disappears never to return even though he was physically present, and this is where I spoil that it's the stupidest movie ever. I can watch shitty horror, hell I even enjoyed Uwe Boll's House of the Dead. But this movie holds no enjoyment for anyone with a grade school education.
Paul Magne Haakonsen I picked this up with the impression that it was a ghost movie, and hoping that it would be nothing like "Paranormal Activity". Having seen "The Silent House" ("La Casa Muda") now, I must say that I am genuinely impressed, despite it not actually being a ghost movie as per se.The story in "The Silent House" does lay out the mood for a great ghost story and it is good at building up suspense and having a spooky atmosphere. And it is filmed in a dark, rather rundown and disarrayed house, which only adds to the spooky atmosphere. The story is about Laura and her father who have been hired to fix up the facade of an old, rundown house and having to spend the night in the old, empty house, but the house has a dark secret...What was really impressive about this movie was that it was shot in one long take, without cuts and editing, that really impressed me. Especially because it must have had added a lot of pressure on the actors (well actress in particular) as there was no room for mistakes and do-overs. But they pulled it off so nicely, it was really a treat to watch this movie. Also, "The Silent House" sent me through a couple of impressions of the movie, starting out with interest and a hope to be scared, but then when you find out about the photos in the attic and who it was that did the strange things in the house, i started to think the storyline was so implausible and sort of stupid, because what they had shown prior up to that made no sense. But then as the credits started rolling and you see all the photos, the truth about the story and what happened in the house dawns on you, shedding a whole new light on the entire movie, and that totally turned me around in my opinion again, turning to awe and amazement. And the ending where Laura walked through the forest and out onto the field, well that was really a good ending. This Uruguayan thriller was really a surprise of a movie, and I am really glad that I bought it and added it to my DVD collection. If you like movies that leave you with a lasting impression and something to think about, then you should definitely watch "The Silent House".
pappershortage Poor acting skills, poor camera angle. Why make a movie if you don't know how to direct? You'll lose the crowd that way. If you don't know the whole story of what happen back then just don't make a movie and think that your going to make a profit out of NOT A SCARY MOVIE. Some parts of the movie make me laugh a little. Like come on, have the actress look for the ghost and you need to have hardcore acting skills. This chick was boring to watch. Hmmm one continuous shot? You think you can break a record? This director needs education. I know this is base on true event. Lets try this word "Base on True Story". The whole script needs to be re-written because it was hard to see the character not wanting to speak or acted like a clueless dummy. I want to see the suspense build up not wanting to see from no suspense to no suspense. Poor production. I hope Elizabeth Olsen has better acting skills then this girl. I mean I gave this girl a thumps up for not acting GOOD MONEY rolling in. Were is the Raspberry Award. I hope the 2012 version is better then this one.
pbruening I like horror movies . . . a lot. I don't care if they're daring & original or formulaic. If they're made well, I enjoy them. That being said, if you don't like the daring & original type (Blair Witch Project, REC, Paranormal Activity, Cloverfield, etc) you may not enjoy this one as much as I did. Sometimes these types of movies fail miserably (District 9). This one was excellent. The word that kept coming to mind as I watched it was 'creepy'. And the Polaroid flash sequence was one of the most frightening movie-watching experiences I've had in hundreds of horror flicks.I actually read one review on this site where the viewer didn't like it because it didn't give a clean answer to questions that arose from the plot twist. Really? Seriously?? If you feel the way this reviewer did, you may want to stick with any of the Final Destination incarnations. There is certainly nothing challenging in there. All tied up with a nice bow on top.Unfortunately, as with Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, The Silent House will undoubtedly be dumbed down and ruined when it goes through the Hollywood cookie cutter machine. Do yourself a favor . . . again, as with GWTDT, watch the original, subtitles and all!
