raybilgin I saw this film December 2008 with my sister and a friend. I'm pretty sure there were only two other parties in the entire theatre--I think it was opening week too... Nobody really wanted to see this film. I'd seen the trailers and hyped it all up to my unsuspecting companions. This wasn't long after 300 came out, so one might be inclined to think that The Spirit possessed serious cult potential. It didn't. Frank Miller should just stick to the comics. It got to the point where people were openly jeering at the screen, and I think we may have walked out because I honestly can't remember the ending. 2/10.
Eddie Cantillo The Spirit(2008) Starring: Gabriel Macht, Scarlett Johansson, Samuel L. Jackson, Eva Mendes, Paz Vega, Jaime King, Dan Lauria, Sarah Paulson, Stana Katic, Frank Miller, and Eric Balfour Directed By: Frank Miller Review I'm gonna kill you all kinds of dead. This is not just the worst comic book movie ever made. This is one of the worst films I have ever seen. The Syle was very unnecessary it does nothing to service the characters, nothing to service the plot, service the story, it does nothing but be a distraction from the fact that the film has nothing to offer. That's all it does and it pisses me off because of all the great things I hear about Sin City(2005). Heck this style could easily work for a freaking Batman movie. But for this it did nothing except made a mockery of how ingenious that style was on film. Frank Miller just looked a t Robert Rodriguez and smacked him in the face with his penis. The writing is so terrible and it was said in a review that Frank Miller can not write women unless their freaking whores, and its so freaking true. Unless their dressed in like a slutty fashion or being sluts their is nothing their. Because every damn women in this movie is made to be eye candy. Even Eva Mendes who they try to pas off as a bad ass assassin and they use her for eye candy every two seconds. And I can't take it seriously. The acting in the movie is beyond, beyond, beyond atrocious and Samuel L. Jackson Oh my God. Sam Jackson is so terrible in this I mean his delivery for his shitty dialogue is atrocious. You want to know how lame the action scenes are in this movie. You ever heard the phrase they threw everything but the kitchen sink, Samuel L. Jackson throws a freaking kitchen sink at The Spirit in this movie. He throws a kitchen sink. Frank Miller a man who has given me my favorite version of Daredevil and the freaking Dark Knight returns, he gave you Sin City! This man is such a talented writer I do understand that this is first screenplay but this man has been writing comics for years and believe it or not but their is not much difference in writing a screenplay for a comic book and a movie. So he has no excuse their. I freaking hated this movie I'm giving the Spirit a half out of five.
Python Hyena The Spirit (2008): Dir: Frank Miller / Cast: Gabriel Macht, Samuel L. Jackson, Eva Mendes, Scarlett Johansson, Sarah Paulson: Color tainted laughable farce about abilities that go beyond normality. Director Frank Miller once again goes with black and white with tainted color and the result is exquisite but screenplay and acting are completely over the top and corny. He previously made the superior Sin City, which was made in similar manner. Gabriel Macht plays the Spirit crime fighter who cannot die. That's truly unfortunate due to the stupidity he will forever be surrounded with in this film. His spirit will live on in shame. Samuel L. Jackson plays the Octopus who searches for a treasure that can result in immortality. Jackson is at the mercy of lame dialogue making this one of his worst film appearances. Eva Mendes, in the one good performance, plays the Spirit's past love now jewel thief. Her change of heart is no surprise but she survives the idiocy surrounding her. Scarlett Johansson plays Octopus's female sidekick, and like Jackson, she is at the mercy of stupidity in one of her worst roles. Despite detailed structure the performances are as corny as the action leaving viewers unfulfilled and perhaps unimpressed. The special effects are the norm but cannot make up for the idiocy in the screenplay. The spirit surrounding this film is a negative one at best. Score: 4 ½ / 10
atlassub34 I saw this movie in the theater and was hugely disappointed. Actually, it's amazing that it was released in such a poor state. I tend to watch sci-fi movies more than once, but I'll avoid this movie like the plague if I see it on the cable guide. I am a comic book collector, though I don't collect the Spirit. Perhaps my lofty expectations were that the movie stay on track or be able to keep my attention. Samuel Jackson must have been looking for a single pay check when he agreed to be in this film. He certainly couldn't have been thinking it would make him any money in post-theater play.If Daredevil is a five out of 10, and Fantastic Four is a 4 out of 10 and Iron Man being a 10 out of 10, then it's fair to say that The Spirit is a 1 out of 10.
