paulfarey Right then, I'm going to start this with a confession: I spent my formative years obsessed with Warhammer 40,000. There, I've admitted it to the world... or at least those in the world who will read this review, who I assume will be of the same persuasion. This movie makes the same assumption. The Warhammer 40,000 universe is vast, complicated, and diverse. It is so difficult for the uninitiated to just drop into it, so the film has a challenge from the start. How do you explain the intricacies of all the individual races, the doctrine of the Emperor's super-soldiers, or the rebellion of the Horus Heresy, all in less than two hours? Well, they could at least have tried! If you don't know the background already, you're going to struggle to understand a lot of what's going on with the plot, or the main character's motivation. In this depiction, the Ultramarines are weak soldiers who would barely pass basic training in our present day, when they are each supposed to be courageous, disciplined, genetically modified killers. During the film, they do little except fanatically yell "for the Emperor" and then run blindly, often to their deaths. They are diametric opposites of their literary and figurine-based counterparts. Similarly, the antagonist, the Daemon, was scrawny and lifeless, where it should have been magnificent and imposing. The potential of this character could have been limitless, but it was sadly wasted. The animation is awkward and bland, without adequately depicting believable characters or luscious environments. The figures move clumsily and the atmosphere is regularly hazy, presumably so they didn't have to draw a more realistic landscape. Come on, this is the 21st century, you can do so much better than this! The stellar cast of voice actors don't appear to have interest in any of the poor dialogue throughout the entirety of the script and I wonder how many of them list this film on their résumé?I had high hopes of this movie and was left disappointed. I know the Warhammer 40,000 universe has a small but dedicated following and I wonder whether there will ever be enough interest to create another film? One that could do justice to the fantasy worlds that had enriched my childhood.
Declan_Moon Absolutely loved this movie, and in my opinion the only Warhammer movie that is worth watching, and i intend to buy this movie as well. The Space Marines are the face of the Warhammer Universe, and i found it very appropriate that they were used for the first real and official Warhammer Movie worth watching. For those of you who are not accustomed to Jump Scares i suggest you turn away during the times that it gets quite, or the scene moves to a halt. I feel that the movie deserves a 10, even though the fighting scenes are not as polished as they could be, and that bigger battles could have of taken place, like when the Imperial Fists fought off the black legion at the beginning of the movie.
Edward Draper First, I should state that I've never played the Warhammer 40K table top game. I have played the Warhammer 40K video game the came out in the past year and getting more into this series, but now to the movie. For this movie being based off a table top game, it was done perfectly. This being the first Warhammer 40k movie, this is a great start and sets the bar pretty high for other to come. I've watched the movie now about 3 times and each time it gets better and better. The voice acting is great. I'll admit the animation of the character's faces in the beginning bothered me, but after watching the special features disc it is a feat of technology they used for the animation. Of course with new technology, there is room for improvement. The story for this movie is amazing. I liked the fact that when it came to the script for this movie they brought in one of the best writers for the Warhammer 40K book series. Not going to lie, now that I've watched this movie, I'll need to buy one of the books by this man.If you have not seen this movie yet, you should see it.
dmcspadd Although this film had a miniscule budget, the creators did an excellent job with what they had and with the source material. The film explains the Warhammer 40K Universe for people who are uninitiated with it. For Warhammer 40K fans, this movie is a real treat. While the story and dialogue could have been better, they do not drag this movie down. This CGI is slightly stylized, but when the action starts, the CGI is fluid and looks good. Another plus is that the Space Marines featured in this movie are the Ultramarines, generally the first Chapter of Space Marines that player of Warhammer 40K become associated with. Judge this movie on its own merits, as a great fan film created by people who love Warhammer 40K.
