Donald F Demonic villains! Near-constant panty shots! Super powers! And bloody deaths! Vampire Hunter D is one of those animes of the era. Exploitative in sex and violence, and generally unambitious. These kinds of anime can either be atrocious or hilarious, if not both. Vampire Hunter D earns distinction because, in comparison with others, it isn't as focused on raunch. There's efforts to build character, and there's a cohesive plot. Granted, it isn't great by any means, but you have something to attach to beyond the action.Elsewise, its what you'd expect. And if you're up for that kind of movie, Vampire Hunter D is pretty fun. Its mixture of Gothic fantasy and dark sci-fi give it a unique aesthetic compared to its peers. Its got the twists and thrills you'd want, too. I'd say it even has a good synth soundtrack! The animation isn't that good, though. It passes well enough, but sometimes its embarrassing. It gets your blood pumped, and elicits a few good laughs. Its not good good, but its not bad good either. I enjoy it for what it is - popcorn that doesn't taste too familiar. If you want the ultimate Vampire Hunter D experience, watch its follow-up, Bloodlust, after this.
WakenPayne 13 Years Before Wesley Snipes Would Star In The Hit Vampire Hunter Movie Blade The Japs Had Made A Movie Of Their Own Vampire Hunter: D. I Have Only Just Discovered This Series When I Saw The Sequel For The First Time 2 Nights Ago And I Honestly Was Blown Away, Within 2 Days I've Found The Original.D Is Hired To Kill A Vampire That Has Bitten His Employer, A Young Girl. The One Huge Problem This Has Is That I Could Only See The Dub, Unlike All Dubs This One Is Descent (Behold The First Movie With A Good English Dub).D Is Also A Very Interesting Character (Which Is Why I Was Drawn To The Series) And The Voice Actor That Plays Him Wasn't Bad.Overall I Suggest A Viewing To Fans Of Vampire Movies In The Vein Of Blade And Underworld.
Rectangular_businessman For a long time this used to be one of my least favorite anime. I still don't like this at all, but I no longer think this is the worst anime ever made: Now I know that dubious honor belongs to stuff like "Demon Lord Dante" or "Genma Wars". Or "Duel Masters". Or "Dinosaur King". Or any other anime series that tries to be the new Pokémon/YugiohAnyway,I still found this to be a terrible movie: The character designs have potential, but are very poorly animated. The plot is extremely basic, being something one would expect from a cheesy B movie, something that would have been tolerable if it wasn't for the dull and uninteresting characters, with can be easily described as a combination of tired clichés that were done to death even by the time when this movie was made. While I don't think that every single movie should have complex or entirely original plots, I consider that at least should have some interesting elements or at least some entertainment value. This didn't have any of that.."Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust" is much better than this in every possible way.
no-skyline This was one of the first Asian animation films I ever saw and really caugth my attention at the time and as such remains one of my personal favourites despite a few faults. Not as epic as the likes of Akira, Vampire Hunter D is none the less a fine piece of animation with an interesting post-apocalyptic setting that takes it's cues from Dracula, Frankenstein etc rather than the cyberpunk of William Gibson et al. 'D' is a very interesting character and an easy comparison is a character such as Blade. Dark brooding and with plenty of past history D wanders the country fighting for good against a tide of evil including vampires and werewolves. There's plenty of action and blood although the plot loses its way at times it remains good fun throughout. As with most anime the English voice characterisations are not the best at times and probably original language with subtitles is the best bet.Vampire killing fun 7/10
