mukherjeesubham93 We have reached the half year mark and seen some impressive movies like Padmaavat, Padman, Raazi, Parmanu, October, to name a few. However, Sanjay Dutt's Biopic 'Sanju' directed by Rajkumar Hirani and starring Ranbir Kapoor is the biggest of them so far. The trailer set the tone, people had humongous expectations, and having watched the movie last Sunday, in a packed theatre, coincidentally the day in which the movie broke the record of Baahubali 2, becoming the highest grosser in a single day earning 46.71 cr, I can safely say, the movie has fulfilled people's expectations. However, there are some things regarding Biopics. Especially a Biopic of such a controversial character, and given how close Rajkumar Hirani was to Sanjay Dutt, there was always a chance the movie would stray from being a biopic and become a propaganda to cleanse the image of the actor and take his side. This has somewhat, come true. Make no mistake however, Rajkumar Hirani has done a terrific job of putting the actor's life on screen covering his battle with drug addiction, his accusation of being a terrorist, his relationship with his father the late Sunil Dutt played with finesse by veteran Paresh Rawal, and a friend who stays with him through thick and thin, who is arguably the best character in the movie, Kamli played to perfection by Vicky Kaushal. Other characters, like mother Nargis, played by Manisha Koirala, girlfriend Ruby played by Sonam Kapoor, wife Manyata played by Dia Mirza, 'God', the man who gets him into drugs, played by Jim Sarbh, and lastly Anushka Sharma as a biographer are also there in the story and shine in thier small roles. The first half moves along nicely mostly focused on the actor falling prey to drugs, his mother's death, his first movie, and of course his fight with drugs. The 2nd half packs in more punch with more controversial topics like accusations of being terrorist, link to the underworld, and his term in jail and his relationship with his father. The music also mixes yesteryear songs pretty well. Kya yehi pyaar hai, and Rocky mera naam from Dutt's first movie, Rocky appear. Kar Har maidan fateh is sure to give you goosebumps. All that is presented, is presented well. But however,a biopic must not take a side. Though this movie declares it is not made with the intention of cleansing the controversial actor's image, it does almost exactly the opposite. Towards the end, it almost becomes a rant against media. How much of it is true, how much is fictional, we'll never know. But then again, Hirani has always been close to Dutt, and quite naturally he chose to say Dutt's side of things. Several other things like Dutt's first marriage, his connection with the famous resident of Dubai, gets a very vague mention. It's better if you try and enjoy the movie as it is, rather than wanting to know what's the truth. If you want the latter you may be disappointed. However, this movie is a must watch sheerly for the performance of Ranbir Kapoor as Sanjay Dutt. He has played Sanjay Dutt even better than Sanjay Dutt! He is the heart and soul of the movie. He makes you warm up to the character, sympathize with it. Hats off RK! This is your best! Overall, Sanju is a must watch for Ranbir's performance, and because it's a well made entertaining movie. However, if you want something beyond that, you may steer clear.
pandeyprabhat2 It's the biggest dud from Raju hirani...never expected this from hirani...I guess he has transgressed from his familiar territory to something he is not gud at... really disappointed
greatamerica I relay love this movie i watch twice Sanju reminds us of the fact that biographical movies need not be about great people! Using the reference to this movie, director Rajkumar Hirani forbids us to indulge in whatever wrong Sanjay Dutt had done earlier in his life. The greatest lesson he gives us is that: we should turn our weaknesses and our failures into our strengths and Sanju is one of the prime examples of it.
kumarss-75085 Excellent movie not be missed, movie was well scripted and well acted
