RaspberryLucozade I was looking forward to this movie when it first came out, not least because it featured Bill Nighy and Gregor Fisher ( who both worked with each other on the 2003 rom-com 'Love Actually' ) in the cast but also because it was directed by Jonathan Lynn, whose previous comedy experience includes writing for shows such as 'On The Buses' and 'Doctor In The House', as well as writing the hilarious 1990 comedy film 'Nuns On The Run'. However, despite its wide advertising, impressive production values and interesting plot, 'Wild Target' resulted in being, not quite a disappointment, but a middle of the road effort nevertheless.Lucinda Coxon's script, while not without its funny moments, is pretty flawed and fails to hold the viewer's concentration. The characters also were too unlikeable and one-dimensional for my tastes.Bill Nighy plays lonely middle aged assassin Victor Maynard, who lives with his psychotic mother Louisa. On an assassination job one day, he meets and falls for con-artist Rose, who is about to be assassinated by incompetent hit-man Mike, whose boss was swindled out of a fortune by Rose and who is subdued by a bullet wound from a nervous young man named Tony. While inexperienced in the handling of the firearm, Tony nevertheless impresses Victor enough for him to suggest that Tony join forces with him and Rose.Rupert Grint, who plays Tony, is boring, unbelievable, unfunny and annoying and his meeting with Victor and Rose is quite badly constructed and Emily Blunt is so robotic you would think she is being controlled by remote. Rupert Everett is so smug you want to pull him out of the screen and beat him up while Eileen Atkins is just plain unfunny. Bill Nighy and Gregor Fisher ( the latter who provides the film's only truly hilarious scene in which he has his ear shot off by Tony when he fails to drown him in the bath ) do their absolute best with what they are given to work off of but in all honesty their talents are pretty wasted here. The car chase scene looks like a pale imitation of the one featured in the aforementioned 'Nuns On The Run'.I personally do not hate this film, nor do I even dislike it but without sounding cruel I would not lose any sleep if I were not to see it again.
Nici Bruckner What an utterly pointless film. I don't remember when i saw something more disjointed, where character development is assumed and clichéd, where the stars are called on simply to do their thing, without bothering to put together a strong script. The funny bits, aren't funny, the "I wonder what thats about they will explain it later?" bits are obvious and forced. The actors themselves, are fine, i pity they had to wallow through this muck. Terrible directing. Terrible editing.I am shocked this is currently rating at 6.8 its a total boredom fest.If only I could get me 2 hrs back, id have got nails hammered into my feet instead, would have been more enjoyable.Worst thing for me is I've seen the leads in other movies, where they played more or less the same roles, and they were awesome. Goes to show how at the mercy the actors from the creative team on a movie, and this team... wow. So rubbish.
beresfordjd This film is a treat - especially if you find Emily Blunt irresistible, as I do. She plays an amoral thief who becomes entangled with a professional assassin played brilliantly with fantastic comic timing by Bill Nighy. Nighy can make you hoot with small almost imperceptible mannerisms and expressions. A few of my favourite actors people this film - Martin Freeman, Eileen Atkins, Nighy and Gregor Fisher but even Rupert Everett, whom I cannot stand, does OK in this black comedy. Rupert Grint of Harry Potter fame shows that he can do more than Ron Weasley and has great timing too. Wild Target is a great piece of ensemble work that everyone should see.
Eva S. Most British crime/ comedy films are full of quick takes, occasional twists and turns, precision and attention to detail, in my opinion. I'd put Wild Target amongst the movies that represent that kind of style.Bill Nighy brings up some classy-ness to his character. A well trained assassin who thinks it's time to retire but that doesn't happen as easy as he'd wish. What's been happening for quite a time now is that very very good and young actors are coming up the big screen surface. Emily Blunt is one of them and does a pretty good job as the attractive thief. Rupert Grint's supporting role is fresh, funny, more mature and just a little bit different that the one we've gotten used to in Harry Potter.Of course i can't leave out the music. Beautiful tunes of all kinds in addition to the sunny scenery of Isle of Man. Not a great movie hit, as far as the plot concerns, but it was a fun film to watch.
