GL84 Returning to his hometown in Alaska, a man comes to believe a series of attacks on the residents are the result of a deadly beast from Nordic mythology known as a Wyvern and races to save everyone from the rampaging creature. This here wasn't that bad of a creature feature. One of the biggest pluses here is the fact that the pace here is truly a lot of fun, as there's some really enjoyable facets here. Thanks to getting the creature out incredibly early, this one is able to unleash a series of fine attacks here that take full advantage of the channel's penchant for including both short and longer attack scenes. The first half here is decidedly on the shorter attacks, as the ambush on the fisherman at the lake, a really fun stalking in the woods going after a lost traveler and the later encounter with the army officer all come off with the usual flair featured here in generating some fine body count kills along the way, while it really kicks up into high gear with the festival attack which brings about a lot of fun in the later half. From encounters out in the woods where they find the nest, a fine battle in the town remains to secure the radio and the finale where they fight it off inside the nest and surrounding forest areas makes for a strong series of action scenes here that are not only really fun but makes this one even more impactful in delivering an entertaining series of side- plots. Through fighting the creature, it comes out that there's more to the creature than expected as the gradual realization of what's being used to build the nest reveals a rather strong sense of characterization here for the creature, and there's some more good revealed through the little scenes of it laying a trap with a wounded victim or cutting off the access roads to trap them there is a highly impressive bit to like here about the creature's behavior. Even moreso is the creatures' appearance, as the dragon-like body and vicious lizard head makes for a really impressive and enjoyable being here as the accurate backstory trying this into the actual Nordic mythology completes the picture here for the film's true positives. There's really only one thing really wrong here as the creature is still patently fake-looking in terms of on-screen execution with the CGI not being in the slightest realistic which runs into obvious false looks here with the lame kills also being quite badly-rendered in this manner. Beyond this, there's not a wholly lot really wrong here.Rated R: Graphic Violence and some Language.
artpf The residents of a small Alaskan town find themselves under attack by a flying reptile known in medieval mythology as a Wyvern. It has thawed from its ancient slumber by melting icecaps caused by global warming.Only we're in Alaska. Ice Caps aren't here. It's a trite, dumb movie that only a dolt could love.Flying monster is OK looking but the story lacks anything really interesting.Acting is mediocre at best and the directing is slow. And of course, they have to throw in a global warming angle. Can you be any more dumb?
SanteeFats This movie is pretty good for a SyFy channel movie. Not only are the characters fairly well developed but the SyFy channel actually got some decent actor/actresses for this movie. I did find it hard to accept the wyvern as it was portrayed. I mean they are suppose to be warm blooded reptilians. How can it rise out of cold Alaskan waters? Where did it come from? Why only one? The fat native deputy is a lugubrious moron, which is a shame. I have seen her in other roles where she is good. The Colonel is a stereotypical retired military type with delusions of alien invasion. Also how does a town of only 307 afford a police chief and a deputy? The Norse myths are an interesting anecdote for the whole movie plot. Not bad at all.
acts2120 Just the thought of a SyFy Saturday night movie makes my eyes roll. However, there was nothing else to do, so we watched.Wow. I was surprised. For starters, the acting was actually decent. Usually, the acting in these movies is painful at best, but the acting in this movie was actually good. There is a bit in the diner near the end of the movie, when the main character gives his back story, that is actually VERY good. The effects are pretty typical for Syfy, however, this monster actually stayed the same size & proportion throughout the movie. Surprising, given the variety of long shots, close-ups, and CGI interaction w/ actors & locations. Someone thought it through, for a change. The story actually made sense, too. The sequence of events played out logically and the character's motivations were actually rational. Sure, there was the typical (idiotic) "make yourself a target" moves when some nit runs away from the only cover, or stands stupidly in the middle of an open area, but hey, it's a MONSTER MOVIE. That comes with the turf. The only utterly, completely, irrational part was the doctor's demise. The end was very enjoyable. Usually, w/ Syfy fair, the best aspect of the end of the movie is that it IS the end - but this actually had a decent ending, finishing up the story well, and having a logical and satisfying monster demise.Usually, the Syfy monster movies' only value would be as MSTy3-K fodder. While Joel and the bots could only make this movie better, their absence does not take away anything from the movie.
