Reviews

tanja-ica At the beginning I liked the show and it was funny, but the longer I watched I got frustrated about the "take home message" of the show! Intelect, knowledge and hard work is (apparently) not something which will help you in live, and even worse- they constantly mocked on Kerry! On contrast, the show promotes that one will get away with just good looks and nothing in your brain. In the end, this show is giving a low self-esteem to those kids who are trying to make something out of their lives. And this is not all- the mother figure- which is supposed to correct such behavior is actually supporting the dumbness.. I really can't watch this anymore..very very VERY disappointing!
Maniac-9 8 Simple Rules for the first season had a lot of promise of being a really good show that they could've easily milked out about 5-7 seasons from the show. But unfortunately the demise of John Ritter put the show in a situation where it would be impossible to succeed.I'll give them credit they made a valiant effort trying to keep the show going. For them it was good luck they had the talented Katey Sagal in the wife role who could be bumped up to the #1 parent role. If they had just an average actress in that role they wouldn't even have been able to get through season 3.As much as they tried to keep the show going the show just wasn't the same without Ritter it just changed the dynamic of the show too much. It was supposed to be about a dad losing his mind trying to keep his daughters under control. But once Ritter passed away they replaced him with James Garner as the grandpa and David Spade as the nephew to Katey's character.
Think_Kong Now, here is a different point of view from many about this sitcom. John Ritter is truly the main actor of the series, however, his death should not have been reflected in the theme of the series. I have watched John's career from the days of that divine comedy, "Three's Company" for which he deserves his place in history, to his more recent movies like "Stay Tuned".Wouldn't it have been sufficient if the producers had paid tributes to John with a flash of his still picture with his date of birth and death, just like an obituary announcement for say, 10 episodes? There are a number of fine comedians (and the list keeps growing), who could easily have played the role of Paul Hennessy. As I watch the episodes about Paul's death, I simply wonder if I am watching a soap or a sitcom, that sadly defeats the purpose of the show. (That's the reason why I am giving this show only 5 stars against 8 before the exit of John Ritter). When "Three's Company" saw the show continue without Chrissy, (Suzanne Sommers), in quite different circumstances, albeit with another actress with a different name, and above all, in an original style, I don't see why another comedian could not have played the role of the father, Paul, while also even changing the family name of the characters from the Hennessy family to something else. I await the arrival of "Just Shoot Me" 's David Spade in later episodes, who will no doubt bring humor back up to standard. Me? I mainly watch the show to see the what the three lovely ladies are up to next.
barbecuedbanana I love the newer episodes with CJ and Grandad - I also liked the storyline with Kate falling for the principal. I want to find out what happens to Rory and Kerry and Bridget and the family next. I think CJ is very funny and I love his scenes with Grandad. I have always loved James Garner in everything he does, and it is a credit to his acting that I never think of him as James Garner or Rockford in this series and totally believe in him as Kate's Dad. This family is so real and funny. It was terribly sad when John Ritter / Paul Hennessey died, but as in real life these things happen and the way it was written into the series and dealt with was both funny and sad and always extremely sensitively and lovingly dealt with. But generally a very funny show with lots of laughs and fun.
