Reviews

s k The first season of Black Sails was rip-roaring ribaldry at its best. Pirates and whores and outcasts and opportunists. It flowed, was interesting and entertaining, and while not superb, it was good enough. Season 2 seemed to follow pretty much along the same lines, but things were already beginning to slip. Then, in Season 3, everything came to an unceremonious screeching halt. From that point on this show seemed to have a monopoly on LONG, and I mean LONG, boring monologues. Whether it was Flint, Eleanor, Rackham, Silver, Max, Rogers, Teach, Madi, Madi's mother...you name it...they ALL got into the act with some of THE WORST never-ending droning speeches I've ever heard. It became a silly, boring soap opera, as other reviewers have already pointed out. It began to take itself WAY too seriously, instead of persisting as just a raunchy cornucopia of pirates, whores, and seedy politicians. The acting was, for the most part, solid. But the little-girl voice of Max really began to grate on my nerves after a while. And even Eleanor's character portrayal wore thin by the time the series wrapped itself up. Flint and Silver were top notch, as was Teach. Jack was just a tick below the rest, although he was solid. The scenery was captivating, and the ships and fight scenes were well done. And there were some nice twists along the way. But instead of getting better and better, this show ended up drowning deep down in the ocean, right alongside Davy Jones' locker. The one thing it did mange to do was drive home the point that the real barbarians were not the pirates, but rather, the English imperialist colonizers.
neilson-jack I can't believe I had never heard of this show before I started watching it, a bit of a mix between Game of Thrones and Pirates of the Caribbean. Whilst the action scenes are great, what really made me love this show is the strong characters and how well they develop them, especially the first and second season where you are still working out character motives and personalities. The strong character development pays off big time later on as you are able to understand exactly who the characters are and why they choose to do their actions whilst still maintaining mystery to get you to ask questions. The main question I had surrounding the show was who is actually the villain in the show? Is there even a villain or does it just come down to perspective? Aside from that the story keeps you going, has amazing settings and great acting (particularly impressed by Toby Stephens as - Captain Flint, Zach McGowan as - Charles Vane, and Luke Arnold as - John Silver).
faizanmairaj All the characters are perfectly casted. And the location are top notch. Also the music and costumes add to the quality of the show.
elyon_frost I will start with what's most important to me: the show isn't cancelled or one of those "It was good when it started...but..." creations we often see. Not only it has an ending, it has, in my opinion a pretty good one, trying up all lose ends. Nothing seems rushed, forced or out of nowhere. Every death in the series (As far as I remember) seems planned out and is treated with respect, so much so, it's hard to e mad someone is dying. The characters, being quite a lot of them, are well developed and their actions are explained and understandable - there are no villains, just people who want different things and change sides constantly to get them. It's pretty much everything one would want from a pirate story. Needless to say the show looks beautiful - one look at the trailer can tell you this much. The actors are great, it has a surprisingly realistic tone and a very interesting story, although it takes about half a season for the plot to kick in, as the beginning of the series is more about who is who, who they hate and what they want. It's rare to see a series so well executed from start to finish, without any behind the scenes problems becoming apparent in it's quality. It's definitely worth a watch even if you are not into pirate stories in particular.
