Reviews

SnoopyStyle Oakland consulting neuro-psychiatrist Eldon Chance (Hugh Laurie) wearily struggles to treat his patients despite the indifference and red tape of his profession. Lucy (Greta Lee) is his secretary. His divorce from Christina (Diane Farr) is costing him all of his money. He has to pull his daughter Nicole (Stefania LaVie Owen) out of the good private school. His new referral Jaclyn Blackstone (Gretchen Mol) by therapist Suzanne Silver (LisaGay Hamilton) leads to her possibly abusive and corrupt police detective husband Raymond Blackstone (Paul Adelstein). Chance is selling his antique furniture with dealer Carl (Clarke Peters) who introduces him to skilled craftsman D (Ethan Suplee). More importantly, he's highly unstable with a warped sense of morality. In the second season, police detective Kevin Hynes forces Chance into investigating computer tycoon Ryan Winter. ADA Frank Lambert takes on the case. Nicole starts having trouble at school. At first, I thought that D was a figment of Chance's imagination. No matter how unlikely, I kept picturing a Fight Club scenario. Once I got used to the premise, the show gets a lot better. I like hard-core Ethan Suplee. Hugh Laurie is solid. There is good darkness overall. The first season has a good tension although the climax could be done better. The second season has a couple of nice villains. Nicole has more involvement then. This is a good show with a darker edge.
boon23 I just finished watching season 1 and with this I am done. The last 3 episodes were a drag with no thrill or surprises at all. Speaking of surprises... well, there was just one for me: they really meant it this way. I was expecting, hoping for a twist, several twists, something meaningful that would make sense, but it never happened. You get what you see and what you see is what it is: Chance is unsympathetic, weak and rather stupid, lacking House's charisma completely. The schizophrenic mystery woman is just that. The bad cop is just that. No twists and turns for the better. The childhood secrets just confirm, what we already know. Superficial and quite disappointing with rare pieces of too much blood and gore.
mustafay Spoiler Alert: This season was totally a different and darker story: The vigilante duo added more sidekicks to the team and they hunted bullies, perverts and a serial killer gang. The family issues got harder to solve, friendships tightened, antagonists got sicker. And all came down to a conclusion where "all is well".Hugh Laurie acted like he was House again. He likes to act that way because people love him and his portrayal of Dr. House.Unfortunately lots of people haven't watched or even heard of there was a Hugh Laurie's medical-crime drama airing. So I guess the second season finale was the series' finale. And it felt good at last to watch him re-discovering (or remembering) that why he bothered to mess up with all the bad guys after all: For good people's sake!Cheers Dr. Chance!
mccaughan2 Series 1 had moments of brilliance, especially the development of the main male characters. I'm glad it's been renewed. Series 2 is off to an edgy start. The cat and mouse atmosphere is well-conceived. The cast is excellent - all the characters have a mix of light and shade.I'm enjoying this season much more without the 'femme fatale' element. Female characters are more interesting mostly developed through Nicole, Chance's troubled teenage daughter. Sarcastic assistant Lucy adds humour. But D played by Ethan Suplee is the best character created in ages. Need to see more of Clark Peters. Hugh Laurie is great in the role and I hope to see him deliver this fabulous series set in San Francisco for seasons to come.
