Reviews

OllieSuave-007 This is one the only mystery/crime drama I saw during the 2000s, and it was pretty good for what it was. It starred Kathryn Morris as Detective Lily Rush, whom took on the task of solving cold cases at the Philadelphia Police Department. As Lily Rush, Morris displays much intelligence, care and precision while digging up clues from the old cases and interviewing those involved years ago - all the while trying to track down the criminal after spending years in hiding. This plot device gave the series a unique twist and a refreshing perspective - something different than much of the crime dramas aired during that time frame. The show captures the humanity and emotions of all those involved in the crime; therefore, you can't help but feel connected to their plight and problems. You also get to see the personal stories of Lily Rush and her superiors and associate - all contributing some sort of added suspense to the show. The series touches a lot of subjects from wars to racial controversies (which were overused I think), and from family dysfunction to friendships gone awry. There are some episodes with political tones as well, but too bad they tend to slant a certain way every time. The episodes were written with much intrigue and surprises, with a well-acted cast of characters and guest stars to boot. The cinematography was brilliantly done, carefully differentiating the past when the "cold case" took place and the present time.A good mystery drama, overall.Grade B+
dansview I'm loyal to this show, but I see its' flaws. I have to admit that the flaws are part of the fun. Two of the regular actors are hilarious caricatures of hard-boiled detectives. Law and Order does that too, but it's less entertaining with them. But there is an exception and she's the lead female. This actress, Kathryn Morris is intriguing. She's human in the way the others aren't. Her face depicts her compassion, a distant sadness from a dysfunctional childhood, and just the right amount of cynicism.I do love the Philadelphia setting. It's gritty and perfect for hard luck stories of the local working class. I like how they depict the sociology of different neighborhoods. The time period music effect is a bit heavy-handed, but sometimes it works. I like it better at the end when they bring in the culprit in cuffs, rather than during the flashback scenes where it's just obnoxious. As someone else mentioned, the best effect is when you see a suspect's face change from present to past and back to present as they speak. Many of the stories are politically correct. For example, a big corporation covering up asbestos poisoning, gays suffering discrimination, Japanese-American internment,or corrupt rich guys cheating. Not that those things didn't happen.Nevertheless, you have to give them credit for coming up with some intricate plots. It's fun to figure out who may have done the murder, based on the show's formula.Overall, a worthwhile hour. Also, they don't give you the gore and sadistic serial killer scenes that Criminal Minds is famous for. They focus on the flashbacks and interviews.
ShelbyTMItchell Despite being so-called "Cold Cases" as they are not forgotten. The show like one viewer says is low keyed but also it is well acted and with emotion.Underrated but great actress lead Kathyrn Morris stars as Detective Lily Rush as the only female member of the Cold Case squad in the Philly PD.She is strong willed and tough but sensitive with a heart of gold at the same time. The show is backed up with great support. By John Finn as her compassionate boss, a pre-SVU Danny Pinto as Scotty Valens her partner, and other support from Thom Barry and Jeremy Ratchford as the comic relief partners.Miss the show as it was and is really a great show. Proving that cases that were in the past should never, ever be forgotten in the present or future to come.
Beaucoul This is quite possibly the best TV show I have ever seen, and that includes some of the modern TV dramas like "The Sopranos," "Mad Men," "Thirty Something," and "My So-Called Life." I'll add to that some of the classics from back in the day, including "The Twilight Zone," "Route 66," and "The Fugitive." I used to watch a lot of TV as a kid, not so much in my adult years. In fact, I only recently started watching "Cold Case," mostly through the miracle that is DVR. Imagine my surprise when I found out the show is already in its seventh season! There are too many things about this show that I enjoy to completely list here, so I'll just go for the ones that come to mind first:Overall concept: This show overturns the collective frustration people feel when dealing with the idea that "justice delayed is justice denied." "Cold Case" offers its audience the extremely satisfying feeling that comes from seeing justice accomplished, however long that justice comes after the original incident occurred.Use of music: The choice of music is uncannily apt for the story being told and the time frame in which it is told. What has really gotten to me though, is the use of music from long ago that I haven't heard in ages. One episode for example, used the song "I Believe (For Every Drop Of Rain That Falls)," a song that I used to hear a lot when I was very young. When I heard it used here, I immediately got zapped back to that time, so long ago. It was a song that I had heard over and over again when I was a child, and it had been lost in my memory. Just an amazing feeling to have it recovered by watching this program.Great ensemble acting: Every one of the characters here is interesting, likable, and identifiable in some way. What really stands out is that all of the characters are used equitably in each episode. The show is ostensibly focused on Lily Rush's character, but it always provides equal opportunities for each member of the cast to shine.Intriguing, compelling stories: Adult, literate, and provocative are the first adjectives to come to mind when describing the scripts for this show. It dares to tackle subjects that are controversial and based on real-life issues. The writing is proof-positive that intelligent TV is possible, and I wish the producers of other TV series would take note.A-list directors, writers, and actors: I've noticed on a number of occasions that the show uses top-notch directors, writers, and actors. Very often these are people who have made an impact in the motion picture industry. For example, I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw that one episode had been directed by Agnieszka Holland, an accomplished director who had helmed the movie "Europa Europa," a favorite film of mine that I've watched on multiple occasions.I could go on and on. Watching this show has actually had a profound impact on my life. I remember episodes that I've watched, long after I've watched them. I've even had dreams based on ideas from the show that have resonated with me and struck a chord within my unconscious mind. That is truly an amazing consequence resulting from a TV show. For all of that and more, I am quite grateful to everyone involved in its development and presentation.
