Majikat As a huge Ricky Gervais fan, this was the one series, I was unsure could make a great comedy, given the subject matter. Somehow though, Gervais & co, manage to pull off some good laughter, among some really poignant moments

shanayneigh This show wants to be funny, but it also desperately tries to be poignant. It ends up being neither. It's not funny enough to be a comedy (nothing in the show is as funny as its hilarious bloopers), and it's not meaningful enough to be a good drama. In that way it reminds me of "Louie" after the first season. This show wants to be heartfelt so bad, but it just ends up being saccharine and sappy. Yes, yes, we should be kind to each other. Fine. What else have you got? That was it? Say what you want about Gervais, he's a great comedian, but a horrible actor. I work with clients with cognitive disabilities and feel like his portrayal of Derek was exploitative and outright demeaning. Apart from being bad, Gervais' performance wasn't even consistent, probably due to his acting skills as well as him constantly breaking character which makes for hilarious bloopers but must be hell in editing.There is no way that someone like Derek would be an employee with these kinds of responsibilities, or that Kevin (and his family at times) would be allowed to be a permanent fixture. Had it been an out and out comedy it would be easier to suspend disbelief, but since the show aspires to something "higher", for the lack of a better term, it just comes off as ludicrous.I respect Gervais for wanting to try something different (although he doesn't stray too far from past successes, given that it's another mockumentary) but this show just didn't work for me.But I'll say this: I would watch a show with Dougie and Kevin in a heartbeat.

John Doe I'll try and keep this short, I really enjoyed the first series of Derek, Gervais walks a fine line with the character but you can see it's a genuine heartfelt portrayal. There's a good balance between Kev, Derek, and Dougie aka Karl Pilkington. This kept things interesting and entertaining. Season 1 gets a 8/10 from me, I recommend giving it a watch.Season 2 starts off with the whole Gang intact but after the first episode Dougie is gone and the balance never returns, this show just lost my interest and wasn't as entertaining without Karl Pilkington. 6/10 i'd recommend skipping season 2 and will skip series 3 myself if Dougie doesn't return.

rosie-sumpter This series is such a refreshing sitcom. Absolutely hilarious, but in an understated way; I caught myself making more than one involuntary snort of laughter in the first episode alone. If you give it a chance, Derek will both make you smile and shed a tear (or many tears if you're me). Another stroke of genius by Ricky Gervais, it mixes humour with poignant moments in the same way as Extras and The Office do. And I can't not mention Karl Pilkington. The character he plays is very similar to what Karl is like in real life (judging by An Idiot Abroad and The Moaning of Life) and, my god, is he what puts the cherry on the icing on the cake.
