Reviews

ukt-68184 This animated series from 1997 is everything I ever wanted, and can definitely be enjoyed by both hard-core fans of the Donkey Kong franchise, and the people lookng for a fun animated series. The characters are in my opinion part of what makes this show so great. The diverse mix of both male and female characters and their different personalities and attributes makes every episode dynamic. We have the main character Donkey Kong (DK), who in my opinion is the best (and hottest) character with his charismatic personality, cool abilities, catchphrase (Banana Slamma) and internal confilcts about how he wants to spend his life. This inner conflict is made clear in the episode "Double Date Trouble" where Donkey Kong has to choose between his social life with his all-time best friend Diddy Kong, his romantic relationship with Candy Kong, and his life as the protector of Kongo Bongo. Diddy Kong is a solid side character with a lot of personality that in the beginning mostly is used as a tool to make DK share his thoughts and emotions with the audience in their private conversations. Candy Kong is a really hot female side character that acts as DK's romantic interest in the series. She adds a layer to every episode as DK now has to maintain his relationship with her on top of protecting Kongo Bongo from danger. Cranky Kong is in my opinion the second best character. He's lovable, yet serious when he has to protect Kongo Bongo, and he has a lot of knowledge that helps the main characters. The crystal coconut, which is under his protection is used by him to move the plot forward in a good way. The coconut also has a set of diverse magical powers that fit perfectly into this series as it creates unique situations that are enjoyable to watch. Other characters include the coolest character, Funky Kong, the narcissistic Bluster Kong, the main cast's friend Dixie Kong, and the main villain: Kinky Rule, a crocodile who wants to steal the crystal coconut to make him the king of Kongo Bongo. I am also happy the creators chose to cast both Apes and Crocodiles, as it gives the show more diversity.Regarding the animation of the series, I just think it's amazing. The character models are details and the movement is fluid. I also respect the desicion to make the series in 3D. Small details also make the series stand out, like the expansion of pupils to express certain emotions. The animation doesn't ruin the energy of the most exciting scenes, such as the fight scenes, and everything feels very real. The voice acting is also spot-on.The episodes aren't very formulated, which is very good as it gives the series variation. Some episodes focus on the struggle to protect the crystal coconut, while other episodes are about the personal struggles of Donkey Kong and the people around him. One thing that is consistent in nearly every episode, however, is the appearence of music numbers sung by different characters of the series. The singing voice of Donkey Kong specifically is stellar, and the melody, lyrics and dance moves are brilliant as well. The most important song of the series, the theme song, is also great, if not the best of the songs. It is energetic, catchy, and shows what the average viewer should expect from the series, perfection. Not only that, but the climaxes, specifically the fighting scenes are great and energetic, and are often in some way unique, which makes every fight worth watching."Donkey Kong Country: The animated series" is an amazing animated series and will fulfill the expectations of any viewer. The animation, voice acting, and storytelling is stellar, and the dynamic character interactions between the likable and deep characters makes the series worth a watch. The series gives you everything: Romance, Humour, Action and Music through a set of varying storylines. I really can't find anything negative to say about this series, and will give it a solid 10 out of 10 rating. By far the best Nintendo animated series.
attila mityok The Donkey Kong Country video games have been a very big part of my life growing up. I didn't actually play the games as I preferred watching my brother or a friend play them but it was still awesome to the MAX!!!!!!Now the cartoon show..... It was pretty good! I liked it a lot as a kid and the way Teletoon advertised it. The opening always got me into the banana slama world of DK and company. Most of the characters are presented, Donkey Kong, Diddy Kong, Candy Kong, Dixie Kong, Cranky Kong, Funky Kong, the kremlings King K. Rool, Klump, Krusha, and the rest of the green cronies. It had some new characters exclusive only to the show like Eddie the mean old Yeti, Bluster Kong, Captain Scurvy and his two hench pirates but no Kiddy Kong, or Wrinkly Kong or any of the animal buddies or big boss baddies. The plot of the show is based around Donkey Kong of tropical Kongo Bongo island, a lovable but dimwitted ape who found a magical crystal in the shape of a coconut with mysterious powers and that can grant any wish. The coconut's seemingly unlimited properties saw good in DK and made him to become Kongo Bongo's future ruler and protector of the crystal which Cranky keeps at house in a dome until he is ready. DK and the gang also visit an ancient temple called Inka Dinka Doo, that holds the mysterious and wise but impatient idol Inka Dinka that helps the characters from time to time. King K. Rool and his hilarious henchmen try everything and I mean EVERYTHING to get it and use it's power to rule the island. Very different than just taking DK's banana hoard eh?? Despite the absence of the rest of the original characters from the games, the show had it's own barrel of laughs! The puns for example I found were funny most of the time and a lot of references to famous apes (listen carefully for them ;). The voice acting was fun and enjoyable to listen to. All the voices suited the characters so well, I could always picture that is the way they would sound, with the exception of Dixie and her character design :( Everyone sings in every episode (sometimes more than once). A lot of people are annoyed by that. I guess having the show be a musical makes a little sense since the games had unbelievable music by the genius David Wise, Eveline Fischer and Robin Beanland and I did like some of the songs- "Pirate's Scorn" "Nobody's Hero" I've got no family tree" "Kung Fu Master" and "Be Bad" to name a few. King K. Rool, Klump and Krusha are my absolute favorites in the show, they are very entertaining to watch and play off one another so well. Diddy's laughter brightens my day and DK's voice actor Richard Yearwood is a great choice, and is a really good singer. King K. Rool's Shakespearean voice is awesome and he sings great too. Scurvy the pirate tries his hand to get the crystal too claiming it to be his birthright in the name of his great, great, great grandpappy. There's sometimes a pretty decent amount of character development that shows in the 90's like the Mega Man cartoon really lacked. DKC attempts a lot as characters will sing- sometimes in different styles of music, and like the games, a bit of good ol' animated slapstick is present and the pacing of the show can be flexible. The writing can be witty, good morals- sometimes a little rushed but all-around entertaining. Now here is the problem with the show. Like Cybersix, I think it could have done A LOT more than it did. It had a good set up and a lot of mystery and questions like, who was Scurvy's grandpappy, where did the crystal coconut come from? Did someone make it? Who built the temple of Inka Dinka Doo? I like how K. Rool tries so many different ways to get the coconut or other means of control over the island but I felt it could have gone directions to let's say, the origin of the island and the Kong family and flashbacks of Cranky's days as the original DK batting Mario. I didn't mind that some of the characters are not here as sometimes it works better than adding too many to lose focus on but I did miss the animal buddies. The CGI animation was nowhere near as good as Reboot or Beast Wars but I think it got better in the 2nd season. It definitely was targeted towards kids but I think it could have been JUST as good as Beast Wars had the writers had more fun creating the world of Kongo Bongo and it's denizens.Overall, I still enjoyed the show a tad more than I did as a lad. It was not a master piece, but memorable and nostalgic. If your interested then grab a banana and swing into Donkey Kong Country!!!
Koneko1 I'm a fan of the Donkey Kong games, so I was kind of excited when I saw they'd made this into a show. I'd had great experiences with my other favorite video game heroes, Earthworm Jim and Sonic the Hedgehog.Sadly, I found myself disappointed with the show. It was made for younger audiences, which can always lower a rating with older fans. I accepted the overall plot of K. Rool being after the Crystal Coconut. It was kind of corny, but I could get past that. Now, as much as I love music, I believe that having a song in pretty much every episode slowed things down. DK's voice actor had a lovely singing voice, yes, but the singing (in my opinion) got in the way of things. They usually had poor lyrics too. The dialogue wasn't the greatest either, but it wasn't horrid. My major complaint is that I wasn't happy with how some of the characters were dealt with. I didn't mind the addition of Bluster, though I think they went overboard with his character flaws. I didn't mind the absence of certain characters. I simply would have liked to see them come in and do something or other. The only one I really wished would have made it was Wrinkly Kong. Actually, the only two characters I had a problem with were Candy and Dixie. I didn't mind Candy's design change. It might bother most fans of the game, but I took it as an improvement. Her personality lacked severely though. I doubt the Candy from the games was the smartest cookie in the cracker barrel, but at least she was helpful and kind. The Candy in this show is essentially useless, bossy and annoyingly shallow. She was a bit of a control freak too.Dixie wasn't much better. I could accept the change in design, even if I didn't care for it. Again, it was personality that really got to me. She lost her pizazz. She was much more passive and bland. She had no spunk, and for some reason lost her animals on a continuous basis. (What did she do to those animals, anyway?) Dixie was one of my favorite characters from the game, so it was disheartening to see such an extreme change that wasn't for the better. I'm not sure why they limited themselves. Had they kept her original spunk, they could have had so many more opportunities for show ideas.King K. Rool and the Kremlings also become fairly blah in the show. They were a bit on the dippy side. I know that was done because they wanted to aim the show at younger audiences, but I still don't care for the changes.I didn't hate the show. I watched it. I was merely disappointed in it. People who are huge fans of the video games and would throw a fit if any injustice were done to it should steer clear of this show. It strays from the video game a little too much. (I know in some cases they need to stray a little to make it work.) Those unfamiliar with the games or are only "meh" fans might like it, or just not care one way or another.
BlackX There's two words that for a lot of people never seem to go together well. "TV" and "Video Games". Sometimes they work, but this is not one of those times. You're favourite characters from the famous series that Rare(which has now, like rumor predicted, left Nintendo, or Nintendo sold it, whatever your view) really boosted. Donkey Kong has come a long way. It started as the villain in what I believe was the first Mario game. In a King-Kong like style, now used in Mario games by Bowser and fellow Koopas, he kidnapped Mario's girl, Princess Peach.Since then, his son(the missing-from-the-show-and-practically-not-counted-as-a-character-in-the-fra nchise-anymore, Donkey Kong Jr.) has rescued him(but has only been seen in rereleased games since Mario Tennis), he's found a bunch of other monkey pals, including Diddy, and has been jumping, pumping and many other ping words until King K.Rool, the evil croc villain of the Donkey Kong Country series, kidnapped him in Donkey Kong 2.Well, ignoring some characters, like the Baby Monkey from DK3 and DK64, the series goes back to the days when Donkey Kong, apparently, was a selfish, macho, self-aware guy, Diddy was the party-guy who was forced by instinct to look after him, and Dixie and Candy were only suspecting love interests, making my previous explanations of the whole video game run obsolete. Cranky, the old geiser, now protects a Crystal Coconut with enough power to rule the island they inhabit, the reason King K. Rool is after them, and doesn't give a lick as to how Donkey kong does it, unlike his advising ways in the game. With stupid time-filler songs that will either repeat themselves again and again in your head or will immediately vanish from your memory, the same back and forth "excitement" over who has the Coconut between the crocs and apes, and maybe a change of setting or a strange thing(the mines and DK becoming a baby comes to mind) supposed to be a so-called "plot", and slapstick comedy aided by the fact they turned Donkey kong into a guy who doesn't care about a thing unless he gets food, like a hairy Shaggy of Scooby-Doo, and Diddy being a monkey that seems high, loves to laugh(and apparently sing) and panicks every 2 minutes make this show pretty pathetic. It can't even get close to capturing the fun of the games.
