Ellen is an American television sitcom that aired on the ABC network from March 29, 1994 to July 22, 1998, consisting of 109 episodes. The title role of Ellen Morgan, played by stand-up comedian Ellen DeGeneres, was a neurotic bookstore owner in her thirties. The series centered on Ellen's dealing with her quirky friends, her family and the problems of daily life. The series is notable for being the first one in which the main character came out as gay, which DeGeneres' character did in the 1997 episode "Puppy Episode". This event received a great deal of media exposure, ignited controversy, and prompted ABC to place a parental advisory at the beginning of each episode. The series' theme song, "So Called Friend" is by Scottish band Texas. A running gag was that each episode had a distinct opening credits sequence, resulting from Ellen's ongoing search for the perfect opening credits.

dlsurman I loved and miss her show. What a fresh and interesting new comedy. Ellen helped open the eyes of America on gay issues, but did not dwell on it or shove it down our throats. It was down tactfully and with class. Her new talk show is good, but doesn't measure up to the freshness and originality of "Ellen" the sitcom. Anyone who has a problem with her coming out on the show, must be insecure with their own sexuality. She did it in a way that I allowed my kids to watch. It opened up discussions with my kids and made it easy and fun to discuss human sexuality with them. Ellen helped America drop their guard with the gay issues. She provided an excellent comedy that was appropriate for the entire family. Parents who can not talk about sexuality with their kids need help. We love you Ellen !
Angel Meiru I don't mind homosexuality or bisexuality at all. In fact, I have been in that community since knowing some of my best friends. However, it is best to keep your deep dark secrets, well, SECRETS.Just seemed like with Ellen herself that this certain thought of it being a private thing did not occur to her and decided to blurt it out. That is what the whole show seemed to be about. That is kinda like saying "Hey everyone, guess what? I HAVE A FOOT FETISH!" or "I am into BDSM and must shout it out to the world."If I had to do something like that, I would turn bright fuschia in humiliation. But no, like I said I don't mind bisexual or homosexual content in TV shows, games and movies (I am interested in a show called "The L-word"), but going on about it until you stereotype youself does not cut it.
rainbow222_de In my opinion, the show was a bit boring at the beginning. Just another comedy that tries to be funny. (this time with a book shop as setting)But after Ellen´s outing quite much has changed, the stories have become really intresting, and in general the show has turned to something special and unique now. The difficult (???) topic has been presented in a very sensitive way and besides the´ve tried to fight against all the silly prejudices which are in the heads of too many people.Furthermore I like that we can laugh with Ellen, not about her. (that´s quite unusual for gay characters on TV). I´m impressed of her honesty and strength to share a part of her private life with the public. ELLEN- YOU`RE GREAT!!! Of course,I love the rest of the cast as well (JOELY,CLEA,JEREMY,DAVID)They´re like everyone´s friends. They get on your nerves, tease you, know everything better - but nevertheless you can´t live without them. In the meantime, I must confess that I hardly can´t live without Ellen and fortunately, it´s back on German TV!
Xophianic I hated ELLEN and am glad it's gone. I never ever liked Ellen Degeneres (her brother Vance is much funnier) because I found her form of comedy annoying. She is my least favorite comedian aside from Bob Sagat. The first few seasons of this show I just found very stupid and non-funny. When Ellen announced her lesbianism, it got worse. Let me make it clear that I do not mind that Ellen is gay, but I just hate how every joke in the entire show was about her being a lesbian. It was unbearable, and made the already bad show worse. I'm glad it's over and I can't believe it lasted as long as it did.
