A slightly more recent review. I watched this based on a still image I saw of one of the ending scenes, and the words- 'You're saying humans need...fantasies to make life bearable.' That scene is really the backbone of this plot, and the brief moments of sobering, heartfelt dialogue amongst the humour and fun are really perfect. The set, and actors are completely full of life, and perfect for this. The author was very involved in the making of this (and there are even fun little videos of him in the extras), which I think is one of the reasons it exceeds expectations. I've never read any Pratchett, but this adaptation made me think I probably should. If you get a chance to watch this- and you are a fan of similar Christmas & magic themed films such as Arthur Christmas, and Rise of the Guardians (which has a similar tooth fairy angle), or just fancy a fun Christmassy romp with a smart undercurrent and heart, then you will be very happy with this.

a Pratchett 's novel adaptation represents always a challenge. because, in this case, the result of imagination has not only two dimensions. so, difficult work. but Hogfather seems be more than a good job. it remains a strange, seductive mixture of new pieces, the delicacy for create fairy tale atmosphere, good acting and smart script. it is this kind of film who gives more than one gift in a special manner. because it is introduction to an unique writer universe. because it has a kind of magic who reminds old truths and new manners to understand basic things. because it is a form of wise lesson about the root of life. and, sure, because it has the right actors for transform a book in a film with high dose of seduction.

I thought this was a movie with an imaginative scenario, sophisticated and exciting. User reviews were generally laudatory. But I found this a disappointment as the script is disjointed, constantly jumping non- sequitur, building unrelated pieces, giving out a product not very nice or even pushing asleep. So the characters lack of consistency, follow-up. From time to time, some scenes make you laugh, but it is a story modelled on a Christmas story left out of an unattractive taste and especially without head or tail. It's a shame, but it seemed a waste of time. It seems like you could endlessly write such story without going anywhere and it is far from a real fairy tale which would make you dream or something. I would not recommend it as there are much more interesting tales for children than this.

The Hogfather is, simply put, a well produced adaptation of Terry Pratchett's book of the same title. It's a fine Christmas tale, and contains several important lessons about being human. The story is simple - Hogswatch, a night similar to Christmas, is under assault by... I won't explain, but it's a similar concept to many Christmas films. Several characters end up trying to save Christmas (and, of course, the entire world) in fantastical places. Along the way there are wizards, mythical creatures, thieves and scoundrels and a truly fair maiden. The characters in this film were wonderful, although they were not as well-acted as I'd have liked. Or, more correctly, they were not as *vibrant* as i'd have liked. Characters in British film and TV are often extremely understated as compared to those in American productions, and I, an American, was left vaguely wanting. The wizards, especially, were rather ineptly acted, and frankly, it detracted from the film. With better acting, I would have added a star. Also, this was a made-for-TV production by the BBC. As such, the production values are exceedingly high in areas such as set and terribly low in others (Death's face being the most glaring example). The series was also far too long to make it regular Christmas fare, which is sad, because a two hour series could have led to a yearly airing. In any case, it was a worthwhile watch, and the ending is very well done. I give this film 8 out of 10 stars. Enjoy it. And Happy Hogswatch.
