Reviews

docwho69 I know FOX has a history of killing good series before their time, see Strange Luck or Firefly, but they may have taken the high ground discontinuing Kindred: The Embraced. The ratings were there for the show and they were going to continue on with the series except for the fact that Mark Frankel was killed in a motorcycle accident. They could have continued the series without him but felt it would have been the wrong thing to do. Maybe it has been long enough and a network should think about redoing the series. We get series like Blood Ties and Moonlight, etc. and they can't seem to make it these days. Perhaps they should try a license that is more well known. I know that the Star Wars live action series will be huge and so would a fantasy series called Dungeons and Dragons. How about Shadowrun or Champions. Heroes as well as the success of all of the Marvel movies lately has got to show the industry that there is an audience out there. I don't think a series based on Vampire would be a guaranteed hit but it would do well on HBO or Showtime. Thanks
Bre McGowan This set has it all...Danger, intrigue, Love, Loathing, Desire and Death. The darkness is irresistible. Without a doubt one of the better series that came out in the 90's but was deemed "too sexy for T.V." by the critics. If they'd have just waited for Buffy to come out it would have been a hit, possibly even more popular than Buffy. The characters are unforgettable. Julian is without a doubt the Prince of the City. I absolutely loved the chemistry between Cash and Sasha. Daedales gave the true meaning to the word vampire. And the clan war?! Without a doubt...a must see. Without a doubt, the bad guys are bad, the good guys naughty, and the characters will stay with you long after the credits roll!!!
lynnewcats This was a wonderful series, full of interesting and charismatic actors. I've followed Patrick Bauchau, for example, ever since, especially as Sydney in The Pretender. The really sad thing is that the star, Mark Frankel, who played Julian Luna, was killed in a motorcycle accident the summer after the series wrapped, leaving a wife and two small children. Don't know if the show had any chance of continuing, but obviously that was the end of that -- and a promising career and life. Too bad there aren't real vampires, so he could have survived beyond the tragedy! As I understand it, some of those who had played the game on which it was based were unhappy with the show -- they felt it didn't really do justice to its complexity or follow its rules. Never having played the game, I had no such reservations. I thought the show was well-written and excitingly paced, and would recommend the set to anyone interested in this genre.
bjsullivan In defending the White Wolf roleplaying game, I feel that those who have commented before me have made the error most of the fans of the game made in viewing the show. The show was only loosely based around Mark Rein*Hagen's works. It was titled Kindred: The Embraced, and not Vampire: The Masquerade for a reason. Was I somewhat disappointed by the fact that they radically interspersed the powers of the kindred from what was in the game? Only because I thought it homoginized the charecters, where clan became largely irrelevant. Of the regular clans on the show, Gangrel, Ventrue and Brujah differed only in their fashion sense, while Toreador and Nosferatu benifited from having distinct and identifiable differences. My only other real complaint of the series was this: The main premise in Mark Rein*Hagen's work was that each vampire had to struggle with his inner best. "Monsters we are, lest monsters we become" being the most popular expression. Watching Julian Luna struggle with his inner beast versus his desire to retain his humanity would have added greatly to the series. That said, I was entertained by the show, and saddened by the fact that it had so short a run. I honestly hope someone takes a shot at this source material again, because I believe that in the right hands it would do very well.
