Metalocalypse is an American animated television series, created by Brendon Small and Tommy Blacha, which premiered on August 6, 2006 on Adult Swim. The television program centers around the larger than life death metal band Dethklok, and often portrays dark and macabre content, including such subjects as violence, death, and the drawbacks of fame, with extremely hyperbolic black humor; which accounts for the cartoon's consistent TV-MA rating. The show can be seen as both a parody and celebration of heavy metal culture. The music, written by guitarist/creator Brendon Small, is credited to the band, and is featured in most of the episodes. The animation is often carefully synced to the music, with the chord positions and fingering of the guitar parts shown in some detail. One of the trademarks of the show is having the usual "bleeps" for extreme profanity replaced by pinch harmonics.

Reviews

Ben Hinman There's a lot of reasons to like Metalocalypse. Its honestly a one of a kind style of comedy i haven't seen anywhere else, and a bit of an acquired taste. A lot of the humor is in the timing, the awkward conversations, the mumbling band-speak, or the moronic or frivolous things the band does. There's also really messed up parts which are so bad but you can't help but laugh. I think one of my favorite moments that really epitomizes the show is Tokis guitar recital that the whole episode leads up to that just spirals out of control, continuously interrupted by band members with their own ridiculous apologies to each other, while the audience has no clue what is going on. Most episodes end in some kind of bizarre convolution or catastrophe, and begin with either the "deathklok minute" or a surreal, creepy looking music video featuring dethkloks own music with fetus creatures, demons, sword battles. It doesn't look like something that would be a comedy on first glance but you get used to the amount of gore and metalness. Basically all the members of dethklok are complete morons. They are the most idiotic people in the show, but yet, practically worshipped by everyone else in the show, and this makes for a pretty funny and strange dynamic amongst the characters. Their manager, Offensden constantly has to try and break through their thick skulls just to get them to stop hemorrhaging money or accidentally killing an entire crowd full of people, and yet somehow manages to keep Dethklok a multi billion dollar business empire. Then there is the tribunal, some kind of secret society that spies on dethklok and fears their power and growing influence, but constantly just lets them do whatever they want. Each of the members of dethklok have their own eccentricities and major flaws, Toki and his shyness and idolization of Skwisgar, who has a love of G-MILFs and loves making Toki feel unworthy, while murderface wallows in self loathing and just being a dick, and nathan has tempers and really really shitty ideas. The studio that makes this is titmouse so obviously its going to have a lot of the surrealist aspect and sometimes seems like an acid trip. The art is very well done and sometimes just gross, but its all in the name of metal. The soundtrack is amazing, and they perform both in the show and as an actual band thats won a bunch of awards for best metal band, and i must admit it is pretty epic.
thewitchkingofangmar-1 This is a great parody which combines excellent music, with "brutal" Metal parody both regarding their love of mayhem and their self-absorbed arrogance. The "black humor" is hilarious, as well as the "Apocalype of metal" involving the satire of American consumerism and "Illuminati shadow government" conspiracy-theory angle.I gave this 9 stars instead of 10, because the series seems to have forgotten its roots in humor, and seems to have become a bit self-indulgent by taking itself somewhat seriously-- particularly with the character "Ofdensen" and his being somewhat of a stuck-up "Gary Stu" character in relation to the parodized band-members; one can only hope that this is explained later in the series as his actually being a "nerd-villain," rather than just a series-conceit and self-indulgence of writers (which always spells a series going downhill after a little bit if initial success goes to their heads).
WAKEnSHAKE I watched the first episode with skepticism. After seeing other adult swim projects flounder and become unwatchable relatively fast ( minoriteam, squidbillies, etc.) I honestly thought this would be another dud. Nothing could be further from the truth. This show is friggin hysterical, dark and cool as hell. Now, I will admit some of the episodes are a tad bit disturbing in terms of gore and brutality but the visual hyperbole that comes with every episode isn't meant to offend the people who watch, but instead is meant to add to the mythology and folklore surrounding the most brutal metal band in the history of existence. The most constant theme of the show is that metal is dark and brutal and therefore disturbing imagery is a must. I for one am not offended and find the darkness of the episodes appropriate. Having seen every episode sevenfold, I will say that this show has rekindled my prior love of metal while simeltaneously making me laugh my ass off at the bands antics. My personal favorite episodes are the last 4 on cd 2 of the DVD's- Dethclown, Girlfriendklok, Dethstars and it has begun...- All embody the darkness and comedy that comprise this show. [ Also see snakes and barrels and bluesklok] Look, to be frank, some people will toss their cookies after watching this show. However, I think the vast majority of people who watch will find this show disturbingly amusing and will become addicted after a relatively short time.
Juhani Kaakinen When I saw the very first episode of Metalocalypse, my mind was empty only for two words: brutal and metal. Metalocalypse is an animated TV show about world famous death metal band Deathlok, which has an ambition to be the most brutal band ever. The band includes five members: Toki Wartooth(guitar), William Murderface(bass), Skwisgaar Skwigelf(guitar), Pickles(drums) and Nathan Explosion (vokills). Each character is unique and blessed (or cursed) whit somewhat twisted personality. The show itself is about Deathlok's every day life which has to be (or seems to be) as brutal and metal as possible. Each, morbid/bizarre episode (20 made), contains an "adventure"(15 min.) of it's own, so the show doesn't have much of continuity. Personly I think that's not a bad thing. As a total metal maniac, I enjoy watching this show: the characters rule, the music rules, jokes rule and explicit violence and gore totally rules!!!I recommend this show to all head-bangers: it's going to be a cult classic.
