Peep and the Big Wide World is an animated cartoon that teaches nature and basic science concepts to preschoolers. The main characters include a yellow baby chick named Peep and his friends Quack, a teenaged blue drake, and Chirp, a baby red robin with pink eyelids. The current show, narrated by Joan Cusack is based on a National Film Board of Canada cartoon short of the same name, created in 1988 by Kaj Pindal and narrated by Peter Ustinov, and another short, "The Peep Show", from 1962. The original short comprised three 10-minute films featuring Peep, Quack, and Chirp as they meet a cat, a ladybug, a turtle and a frog who speaks from both sides of his mouth. The show is produced by WGBH in Boston and 9 Story Entertainment in Toronto, Canada. In the US, this show formerly aired on Discovery Kids as part of its commercial-free and sponsor-free "Ready, Set, Learn!" programming block. It now airs nationally in the United States on public television, distributed by American Public Television. In Canada, it airs on TVOntario. DVDs and books are also available for purchase. Peep and the Big Wide World is currently sponsored by the National Science Foundation in conjunction with WGBH-TV as part of an education and outreach program. The principal investigator is Kate Taylor, also of the ZOOM block. The National Science Foundation is the only permanent sponsor of the show. Northrop Grumman, The Carnegie Corporation of New York, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and Toyota funded the show for only season two. The Discovery Kids Foundation funded the show for only season one. In 1999, the show was produced by Clumsy PriStar Television. The VHS copies are produced from Clumsy Pristar's home viewings.

Reviews

eatcrowepls This is a cute show but it wears thin really quick and gets incredibly annoying to any adult. The voices and stories and music just grate on my ears. Some kids even get annoyed and bored with it. If your kids do like it, turn it on but not too loud and only when you're going to be in the other room doing chores or something or you'll end up super annoyed at it. I will say this though, Joan Cusack is AMAZING even just doing the narrator's voice work in this.
ugduco A great show that's a moving masterpiece and a beautiful, inspired, achievement of mankind.
Lizabeth We all love "Peep!" My daughter got a "Peep" DVD set for her 2nd birthday two weeks ago, and we have literally been watching it ever since then. She loves it, and my Husband and I find the show very entertaining. The show is educational, of course, but has enough humor in it that everyone can enjoy it...it succeeds at entertaining all ages, a rare thing, indeed! The simple animation and bright colors of "Peep" appeal to young children while the plots convey simple scientific principles that will enrich their minds. The animated segments are supplemented by real-life sequences which employ the scientific facts imparted in the cartoon. These live sequences will give children and parents some great ideas for trying out their own scientific experiments. In conclusion, I cannot recommend this program highly enough. As Quack might say, this is a fine specimen of television programming! Enjoy!
jeanine-20 Peep is my daughter's favorite show, hands down. She is now 3 1/2 and has been watching it for over a year. It is the first show she asks for in the morning and the first one she wants after nap/rest time. Her dad and I have seen every episode that has played on TLC (more than twenty times each), and we keep at least 10 or so on TIVO. We often find ourselves quoting Quack lines throughout the day.We even used craft clay to make (and bake) our own Peep, Chirp, and Quack. Now she's asking if we can make the rest (Newton, the Ants, Squeak, Madame Hoot, etc.) It is a wonderful program, and we cannot wait to see new episodes!Oh, and today she has asked me for some string, tape, a straw and two empty plastic bottles to make her own "experiment".
