Reviews

neppie I knew this series was a gem reading it was canceled before my knowing of its existence. "Red Band Society" joins the list of short lived, too good for television dramas with "A Year in the Life" and "My So-Called Life". One episode even contains a subtle tribute to the later, with Wilson Cruz reprising an aspect of his "Ricky" character, proffering advice in a women's restroom.Perhaps its initial audience tuned in expecting a more traditional adult medical drama. None stuck around long enough to catch that the dialog and jokes were far from juvenile. Any families expecting a cute and corny feel good pick-me up would be turned off the by its seriousness and mature dialog: "More like 68. You do me and I'll owe you one".The drama might have been designed to be short lived. The patients had life threatening illnesses and not all can be survivors. Had there been another season it would be a different cast of sick kids each year, with only doctors and nurses roles recurring. That's not the formula at all. Would another character enter a coma to be the wise and sarcastic narrator watching events play out? The series went so far as to treat mental disease seriously and shun pity. A scene where a cancer patient crashes a homecoming dance turned pity party for an undeserving cheerleader queen (also a terminally ill patient), dissing her on stage (much to her delight), should have become a classic. Once I might have been upset that a clever, original show not fitting the mold was too unpopular to continue, while Kardashians and formula procedural dramas reign on for years. Now only count myself privileged for having seen it.
rebeccalamastra Unlike most shows on TV today, Red Band Society has meaning. In the short time that the show has been on, it has shown that no matter what happens in life, whether it be sicknesses or relationship struggles, you can still make the best of the situation. Each character on RBS struggles with these issues, but they manage to continue living their lives and have fun. I can honestly say that the characters on the show have become an important part of my life and impacted it in many ways. Although I will miss the show greatly, I'am just so glad that I even had the opportunity to watch the one season. I want to thank the cast and crew of RBS for giving me the chance to watch such an amazing show, even if it was only for a short time. On behalf of myself having struggled with a mental illness since I was 9 years old, and every other fan of Red Band Society who has struggled with something, the show has helped me to realize that we are not alone. I hope that everyone associated with RBS knows how important this show is to me, and I will continue to have hope for the future of Red Band Society. Amazing show. The ending had me in tears. Can't believe that it's really over.
padmapeg What an unexpected treasure! In a world of lowest common denominator television, this show has surprised me with the quality of writing, acting and stories that capture the complexity of life. Laid on the foundation of life in a long term care ward, these stories go quickly into matters that matter...life, death, relationship, meaning, our own relevance as human beings. The writers seem to have clear insight into the inner life of teens; while many teen shows still stay in the Miley Cyrus era of smart mouth conversation or more superficial focuses, Red Band takes us deeper. There's something about having a boy in a coma offering us a wiser view from the near heavenly realms, teens who are multi-faceted in their strengths and vulnerabilities, and a likable cast who all seem to have heart and soul, contradictory motivations, and complexity, that places this show heads and shoulders above the rest.As an over-40 year old viewer, I find the dramas and the ways in which they are expressed in each show compelling. The things these teens wrestle with... am I REALLY OK...am I acceptable...lovable... do I fit in, are the same issues that drive much adult behavior. Only in this show, they are refreshingly transparent and somehow find the middle ground between sappy and satirical. Fox, for the first time in quite awhile, i am engaged with a show and a cast. Please keep this show! And please market it better... I think you'd have a LOT more fans if people actually saw commercials that captured the essence of the show.
vbdolman I've watched the pilot episode 4 times already. Octavia Spencer is fantastic and all the kids work so well. I love the narrator. I hope his storyline plays out happily. The only thing that bugged me is the kid who's apparently gone through tons of chemotherapy(and is bald) still has eyebrows like Colin Farrell. I'm not generally a stickler for realism in my entertainment but some errors are just TOO glaring. After reading the IMDb page and seeing the cast list, it looks like I'll be missing some characters (like Wilson Cruz's nurse). I already like at least half the people in the show and hope Fox won't pull the plug early (like they've done to so many other promising shows).
