Blackthorne and Mariko begin a romance; Toronaga continues to build his army for a battle with Ishido. Anjin-san proves his mettle during an earthquake and is honored by Toranaga for bravery. Mariko's husband Buntaro, arrives in Anjiro.

Richie-67-485852 Superb no nonsense entertainment that deserves nine hours of watching time. Richard Chamberlain pulls it off along with an excellent support cast to bring us a good story to tell with history thrown in. Great scenes of the Japanese culture and customs too. This has held up to the tests of time and it is only $20 or less for the whole thing depending on where you shop making it ideal for the home library. Watching this makes...

thedaddywilson I remember watching the mini-series years ago (more than I would like to admit). It was worth watching then and worth watching now. Some people make comments about the special effects, we have to remember how long ago it was made. It is still extremely great entertainment, from the moment they meet the Japanese people too the time Blackthorne becomes a member of Toranaga's family. The many differences between the caste system from the lowliest peasant to the highest ranking Samurai Lords. Their different outlook of life and death was centuries and world's apart. I would recommend the series and the book to anybody. People can criticize the wardrobe the speech or other things. I don't believe it was ever made as a documentary, it was made for entertainment. It is my opinion that it was kept as close to history as was needed. Any closer would have been unnecessary after all it was made for entertainment not education. I think it showed life as it was without any bias in any way. I would like to see it remade. With the wealth of talent in the film and television companies from all the differing jobs involved in making films and T.V series it would be amazing. A definite 5 star's for the existing series. Hoping to be able to rate another version.

mx44 I'm really mad today because I expected to see a good show.Instead I've seen something.Almost everything is changed.I know the book by heart and this changes made me scream and swear all the time.Blackhtorne seems to be quite stopid,Mariko knows English I guess,not Portuguese,Toranaga is just a cruel leader(when he's the main character in the book). What sort of trickery is this? Blackthorne is a great character in the book(Latin is a must,also for Mariko,Alvito is magnificent,Toranaga is the puppet master etc),but they everything look so dull.To bad I can't give it a ZERO! But I tell you a simple thing: "Read the book and open your mind!"

Dean S (deansawas) This miniseries does a credible job in presenting the cultural landscape during the Shogunate years. Not only is it a historical (somewhat modified) adventure, it demonstrated the advances the Japanese had made in medicine, iron-working and in other areas. It shows the differences between the Western and Eastern attitudes towards cleanliness and religion- which had not been presented before. It also shows the stratified class society of those times. A shock to our delicate sensibilities - but, at least an attempt to show it in a positive manner. The costumes and background was very accurate for the time and it was the first honest attempt to portray the Japanese in a kindly manner since before Pearl Harbor. Could it have been better - yes, could it have been more historically accurate - again yes, BUT it sure was light years better than the horrible attempts that had littered the movie landscape in prior years. It also encouraged people to see Toshiro Mifune and Kurosawas' other classics such as Rashomon, etc. Definitely worth watching.
